Historia
All is well until the Whitmans - an apparently traditional family with new money and a secretly troubled teenaged daughter - raze the house and trees next door to build themselves a showplace. With little in common except a property line, these two very different families quickly find themselves at odds: First, over an historic oak tree in Valerie's yard, and soon after, the blossoming romance between their two teenagers.

Historia
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

Beautifully written, MASTERFULLY NARRATED
Revisado: 03-10-21
I was swept along , listening to the pitch and cadences of the narrator's reading of each individual's story. Ta-Nehisi Coate's fictional narrative draws word pictures I could easily envision. He emphasized what so many tellings of the slavery era ignores - the high intelligence, loyalties and beauty of people captured and held in bondage.
We've had many writings of the insensitivity and brutality of slavery. Ta-Nehisi's narrative had to tell this horror also, but more was of the character of the individuals and mysticism of their forebearers.
The skill of the narrator makes me want to find other stories he reads.

A serious history lesson
Revisado: 02-06-21
I am amazed at the extent of detail given in this book. President Obama obviously kept his daily diary infused with his emotions, as he confronted the obstacles to his every decision.
Overall, I have a better understanding of why he compromised so much in his 1st two years in office.

Eloise hasn't quite figured out how to move on after the death of her son, Eddie. Historia
Amanda and Clay head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they’ve rented for the week. But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and G. H. are an older couple—it’s their house, and they’ve arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area—with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service—it’s hard to know what to believe.

So Very BORING
Revisado: 10-10-20
I was excited to pre-order this book, based on the enthusiastic review by Jenna Bush Hager on the Today Show. I kept waiting for the story to become better. The clues kept pointing to a climatic "Something Very Wrong" was about to happen.. However, my frustrations built as the story dragged. My irritation grew as I kept waiting for the story to get better. Why was the narrative for the wife Amamda so incredibly HAIRBRAINED?
This was a terrible waste of my money. Wish I could have traded it for another choice.
