Ruth Ben-Ghiat is the expert on the "strongman" playbook employed by authoritarian demagogues from Mussolini to Putin. In Strongmen, she lays bare the blueprint these leaders have followed over the past 100 years, and empowers us to recognize, resist, and prevent their disastrous rule in the future.

History doesn't predict the future, but you'd be very foolish to ignore it since the same play book is used over and over, and fascist usually aren't really creative people. Excellent Book, I learned a great deal.

Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

I was blown away by the detail and research that had to be done to produce something like this... I've always respected Rachael but I was really hoping to get a few of my brainwashed fascist supporting friends and relatives to read this but in upside down land of the Q driven ultra right ( the new center ) the more effective communicator the person is the stringer visceral reaction they have.. it would have been great if it were written by someone they'd never heard of as I could have gotten them interested in a history book. Unfortunately that won't be possible in the hate fueled misogynistic place they live. So on my behalf, and what I got out of it, Thank you Rachael.

Historia
The Long Discourses of the Buddha (Dīgha Nikāya) is the first of the five Nikāyas (Collections) in the Sutta Pitaka and has its own particular character. Unlike the others which contain thousands of shorter discourses (suttas), it comprises just 34 but of much longer length - as the name indicates! This makes it in some ways a more focused collection of teachings of the Buddha and especially accessible in audio.

Historia
The legendary investor shows how to identify and master the cycles that govern the markets. We all know markets rise and fall, but when should you pull out, and when should you stay in? The answer is never black or white, but is best reached through a keen understanding of the reasons behind the rhythm of cycles. Confidence about where we are in a cycle comes when you learn the patterns of ups and downs that influence not just economics, markets and companies, but also human psychology and the investing behaviors that result.

Historia
If you have read my other books, you know that I like to take complex ideas and break them down so they become accessible to all who read it. I will attempt to do so in this book as well. I have always resonated with the Eastern paths and like my work with the Occult, I found that all these teachings are so very technical and complex. If you know me, you know that I think complexity is never a sign that the underlying teaching is effective or any good for that matter.

Eh.. cant expect too much really
Revisado: 11-14-20
It is short, and spent a significant amount of time on different Buddhist subjects which weren't dependent origination one of the major tenants of Buddhism. I've been a Buddhist and studying Buddhism daily for decades and found Dependent Origination not a trivial subject. The author talked more about himself and other books of his that he is hawking than he did about Dependent Origination If that is what you are looking for, you might well be advised to look elsewhere. I think Ananda, the Buddhas cousin and attendant famous for his photographic memory and understanding of the Buddhas teachings, commented that Dependent Origination was easily understood, the Buddha admonished him and said if he believed that then basically he didnt understand it. I think the same is true in with the author of this book. The book isnt without merit, which is why I gave it 3 stars, but very little is said on the topic. To his credit, the author plainly states that he writes on many religions, the occult, and lots of magical things which in the world of Buddhism are considered rubbish. Coming from these points of view I can see where there might be lots of misunderstandings. If you google for Bhikkhu Buddadasa (enlightened thai forest monk) for his book Paticcasamuppada: Practical Dependent Origination, you'll probably find a much better treatment. Though I haven read it, but I have read many other excellent books of his and he was considered a scholar, enlightened, and a great teacher. That's probably a read I will do soon. Best of luck to the author and readers in pursuit of enlightment.

The Christlike character and divine personality of Bhagavân Srî Râmakrishna is revered and worshiped in India today as an ideal manifestation of the divine glory. His life was so extraordinary and unparalleled that within 10 years after his departure from earth, it aroused the admiration, wonder, and reverence not only of all classes of people in his own country, but of many distinguished English and German scholars of the 19th century.

If you're involved with Vedanta or are interested
Revisado: 02-13-20
I was a member of the Moth (Vedanta Church) for about 13 years in the USA. I thought it was far superior to all the very narrow Christian religions I had been involved with before (this was 25 years ago now). I started because i married a Hindu and left because of divorce, but I never had anything other than the greatest admiration for it.
My one complaint is that there was no formal meditation taught there, I was told that this usually required becoming a monk. This may have changed with the populaization of meditation over the last decade - I dont know.
I did find what I was looking for in the Buddhist Thai Forest tradition which stresses meditation (daily and retreats) and is available to me. Note that many forms of Buddhism do not stress meditation and are heavy into ritual which after practicing (meditation) long enough you realize are just empty trappings. Though you always pay reverence to these rituals of others, really become quite a waste of time after some spiritual progression.. I think it was Sri Ramkrishna who said paraphrased) "You can say my religeon is right, but you should never say another's is wrong". Rituals may aid your state of mind (and in developing a better mind will help develop better kamma), but you can accomplish that without them.Intrinsically on their own they are empty and useless - but if they help you personally.. do it. So my suggestion is Meditate, meditate, meditate and dont get distracted with ritualized religion.

I can't believe it's FINALLY an audible book!
Revisado: 12-08-19
I read this one, just listening to it now. I find some humor in someone complaining about the speaker and some mispronunciations, likely it was the irritation of the wrong color on the graphic and the wrong font set them off. To the person who made the comment, please know I'm not laughing at you.. it's at me because it sounds like something I might say before I realize what words are coming out of my mouth.
It's the Dhamma.. it just works and the reader is competent. Maybe your ears heard the sound but it all stopped there.
This is the smallest of the Nikayas, Yet it's still a really huge book and I give the reader thanks as I think few could deal with doing a reading this long. I've been very satisfied with what I have heard so far. I look forward to the day when all the Nikayas are on audio.. it's a great blessing. As I get older and older, and my eyes wear out. I'm only 1/2 through all the Nikayas and its' been 3 years, my eyes have gotten worse ( not from reading the Nikayas but from age). Please try to complete the other Nikayas if you can.
