The Solano family have just buried their father and husband after he succumbed to his illness and Dante, his son, is struggling with grief. He is consumed by the regret of never being able to see his father again. To settle himself, he takes a trip to the cemetery each night to feel closer to his father. He was buried with his cellphone and Dante gets the idea to call him. The call goes through and his father answers, leading Dante down a paranormal path to his father who will show Dante the horrors of the past and to warn him what he must do to keep the monsters at bay. The world this author presents combines familiar, comfortable spaces, as well as, dangerous spots with dangerous people and things. Robert Scarlatto's imagination is top notch as are his skills as a narrator.

This box set includes The Billionaire's Bodyguard, The Billionaire's Enemy and The Billionaire's Lover. In each there is a strong, successful woman who's being stalked or is in danger and needs a bodyguard, whether or not she wants one. Sean and Eva have history since they dated in college but Sean broke up with her to enlist in the Navy. She hasn't forgiven him for not including her in the decision and now he's back as her personal bodyguard. Caitlin and Jared are natural "enemies" as Jared tries to buy shares in Caitlin's company. His endgame is to merge their businesses together and form a more powerful company. It's the last thing Caitlin wants, but she can't help but be intrigued by everything that is Jared. Bailey and Luke is as witty as it is sexy, and it's my favorite of the set. What should have been a one night stand becomes much more. Bailey meets Luke in a bar over a legendary bottle of liquor and they spend the night together. She had no idea that she'd see him again and so soon, but the attempted kidnapping at her friend's engagement party shows that someone isn't playing games anymore. Luke is a highly-touted bodyguard and he's hired to keep her safe from the family's long-time nemesis. These are excellent and unique stories with a common thread and it was nice to be able to read three stories back-to-back.
The narration is very well-done by Esther Ashe. Her dynamic, well-modulated voice with excellent pacing and inflection brought each of the characters to life.

Called Up is the first book in the Dropped Puck series, and it's the perfect beginning for the story of the NHL Chicago Sharks. The series revolves around the teammates, the families and the fans, all on a journey to the NHL Championship and the Stanley Cup. Bitsy Thayer is the younger sister of Shark's superstar Brian Thayer. She's in her last year of law school and she's studying to take the bar. But her real joy is following the Sharks, mainly because she has a crush on Brian's best friend, Hank Dubois. Unbeknownst to the other, they've both harbored feelings but Hank hasn't acted on them because she's not yet 21. They've kept it underwraps for years and on her 21st birthday, they discover the truth, but Bitsy has a boyfriend. Pierce (pencil d) is a man with many demons, but he's been able to keep them at bay, until Bitsy comes home one night to accusations that she's cheating. Pierce is incensed and Bitsy is in the way of his anger. (Domestic violence is one piece of the plot and Rosie handles it with aplomb and sensitivity.) Her brother and Hank insist that she move in with them so they can keep her safe, but when the team is playing on the road, Pierce finds her. It's definitely traumatic but it's so well-written that it feels as if we're experiencing the pain and fear. As she and Hank take the next step of living together, their love story blossoms. This is a marvelous story that expertly introduces many of the main characters, along with their backstory. It's a book that is as quietly unsettling as it is tender and emotionally gripping, all leading up to what's going to be a very happy ending. This can be considered a standalone, but the series is richer with more depth if the books are read in order. Kamryn Myles does an admirable job with the narration. Her dynamic voice, varied intonation and inflection gave each character a unique voice and personality. She kept the pace steady and it was a joy to listen to her bring the story to life.

The Chronicle of Curses by H L Mcfarlane, is an interesting take on fairy tales with a twist. This is an omnibus of the first three books:

Big Bad Mr. Wolfe
In an alternate universe, the Big Bad Wolf is a Cassanova who has been cursed by Red Riding Hood's grandmother. Circumstances of her birth have denied Scarlett Duke her rightful inheritance, and she's sent to live with her witch of a grandmother. She's a vengeful witch who practices with powerful herbs, poisons and imparts powerful spells. She cursed Adrien Wolfe for an unknown indiscretion, so he's forced to live his life as a werewolf. When Adrien spots Scarlett on her way to grandmother's house, he knows exactly what he's going to do to take his revenge on Grandma and the curse. As with many happy endings, the cursed witch meets karma!

Snowstorm King
This is a take on Frozen, with Killian, a hedonistic king, who never wanted to be king, who sits impatiently waiting for his older brother to come back from war to take his place on the throne. But Killian's father cursed his younger son on his deathbed to remain in the house until Gabriel is home. Killian loses all interest in the townspeople and lives a stagnant and unhappy life. Elina is a beautiful young woman who's shunned by the town for her exotic look. She has never felt accepted nor included and she feels ostracized for the circumstances of her birth. She goes to see Killian to ask for provisions to help the townspeople through a devastating winter and, for the first time in forever, he is fascinated by a woman. Elina grows to love him and, much to his chagrin, Killian realizes that he loves her, too. Alas, there is a problem with his brother Gabriel that has kept him from coming back to ascend the throne....sometimes there's a woman involved!

The Tower Without A Door
This story is a study in the blind leading the blind into a trap, with a cast of characters intertwined in ways that are more than a surprise. Princess Genevieve has been banished to the tower from where there is no escape. Her father, the king, found that his wife, the queen, was involved with his brother and believes that Genevieve isn't his daughter. After 12 years in that tower, she finally found a way out, with her long braids to support her, but she gets caught up in the window and is simply hanging by a thread (of her hair.) Julian Thorne is a wizened wizard who sees that Genevieve needs help and once she's safely on the ground, she asks that Julian take her back to the castle and to the family that abandoned her. Neither one has any idea of the death, destruction and shock awaiting them. With a level of violence I wasn't expecting, there is finally a happy ending. This omnibus of the series is in part delightful and fascinating and a highlight for me, is the reappearance of Scarlett and Adrian who share some secrets and some potions.
The narration by Alexander Bevan is very well done. His dynamic, well-modulated voice, constant pace and inflection bring each of the characters to life with a unique personality and attitude.

Janessa fell in love with Seamus (Irish) the first time she saw him at fourteen years of age. Seamus had a moment of surprise, followed by a moment of clarity, as he felt a type of pull for a girl, not yet a woman, who happened to be the daughter of the prez of Dixie Reapers MC and that pretty much signals hands off! For five years, Janessa fantasized that they would be together, but when she became legal at 18 and he didn't come for her, she decided to take action. She goes looking for him at the MC clubhouse and she finds him with a blonde in his lap. When Irish purposely sticks his tongue down her throat, Nessa flees, only to get into an accident that almost took her life. Irish knows it's all on him and he shouldn't have provoked her with that kiss, and now that he's found her in a coma and critical condition it's apparent that someone targeting her. When Nessa comes out of her coma, Irish vows to be with her in any way she'll allow. It's a truly sweet story with a full helping of family values and a couple who have stood the test of time. It warms my heart that the children play such an important role in the overall arc of the story and it's on that high note that Janessa and Irish get their happy ending.
Umi Markkanen does a great job portraying the characters, bringing them to life, giving each their own voice and personality. You could hear how much heart she puts into her work as she captures the character’s emotions and projects them into her performance. She is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to.

I have enjoyed the first three books in the Billionaire series, but The Billionaire Bodyguard fell flat. The story was excellent, but I found Eva annoying and a little too strident. Sean left her six years ago, thinking he was doing the right thing by freeing her when he joined the Navy and SEAL training, but she has never truly gotten over him and the hurt that he caused her. She and her sister run a multimillion dollar corporation and Eva has someone stalking her and sending her texts. As the frequency speeds up, it's decided that a bodyguard is what she needs, and in walks Sean, of all people. There is both tension and interest at work, but Eva can't help but go right back to the anger she felt when he left her. It was nice to watch them grow and to get back to a comfortable place in a new relationship, but then Eva had to and mess things up. Sean did his best to protect her by not giving her every little detail of how she was being guarded. When she found out that he had kept things from her, she went ballistic and her inner feminist appeared. She was tough, strident, annoying and it wasn't long before I was begging Sean to do a disappearing act. I have to be honest and admit that it's a good story, but her black and white attitude was frustrating! The narration was beautifully done by Esther Ashe. Her dynamic, emotional voice, solid pace and modulation of the story are perfect from start to finish and the characters feel alive.

Alex Hanas' father, Costas, is used to having his family for Sunday brunch and this day is supposed to be special. It's the day that Alex meets the "American gold digger" who just married his father and her frumpy teenage daughter. You can imagine his surprise when she turns out to be someone he can't take his eyes off, but she's only 17 years old. It's a monumental moment and he's convinced that she's it for him, which is an odd thing to say for such a committed player. Alex is the sweet, caring kind of Alpha male and he's definitely OTT when he's protecting her from a trauma inflicted years ago. I simply fell in love with this couple and their world of opulence. Ainslie Caswell does an excellent job with the narration. Her clear, dynamic voice, solid pace and inflection give each character a distinct personality and attitude as she brings them to life.

When billionaire Roger Bernard Ashton died it became apparent that his sons didn't consider him a good father. They felt that he didn't care much for them and were still bitter that he cheated on their mother. The dysfunction was palpable. Ryan, Cole and Ethan Ashton are together for the reading of the will. There is a copious amount of tension in the room, stemming from the fact that it's the first time the brothers have been together in one spot. Ethan is their half brother, the product of the affair between their father and his mother, and to say it's uncomfortable is an understatement. During the reading of the will, it's apparent that their father is trying to get in one last shot because a stipulation says that each of his sons must be married for a year before they can inherit their shares of the company. Perhaps Roger knew what he was doing in an attempt to bring his sons together, because the discomfort quickly turned to cooperation and sharing. The three books in the box set follow the love story of each of the brothers. Once Ryan and Mica are married, the media gets a hold of the stipulation that they must be married for their inheritance, they need to get ahead of the story by facing the board of directors to convince them that their marriage is real. When some of the wives think that stipulation to marry is the only reason their husband married them, they assume that they won't be wanted anymore once their year-long marriage is over. Hint: the husbands are much too smitten with their wives to want to end the marriage and they'll have to do some serious wooing. I truly wanted to slap a couple of faces and tell them to be honest with themselves, but it all works out beautifully with three HEAs.
The terrific narration by JD Tomlinson, AJ Clarke and Jim Catapano made this story more emotional and believable. Each character has a unique personality and attitude as they brought them to life.

Final Shot is the last story in the Dropped Puck series and it once again showcases Ms. Burke's understanding and insight into the game of hockey.
Three years ago, Bryan Thayer was traded to the NHL Chicago Sharks and the team is in the hunt for the Stanley Cup. Olivia D'Amore is a journalist whose promotion sends her to Chicago to follow two of the stars on the Sharks. One is Bryan Thayer, a man she ran from ten years ago because of a misunderstanding. Now that she's going to be covering him in his day-to-day life, perhaps they can finally have an honest conversation to find their way back to each other. Bryan and Olivia met in college when he helped her move into her dorm room. There was an immediate attraction and they became best friends, although both were secretly wishing it were more. Bryan made a big mistake when his teammates asked him if Olivia was his girlfriend, his answer hurt her deeply and she left for home. Separated for ten years, her promotion comes through and the second chance presents itself. This is a heartwarming book that includes a look back at the other Sharks and their partners. It's a successful way of dotting all the i's and crossing all the t's. Take notice of the author's comment at the beginning where she clarifies that there will be some material that could be triggering.
Harlow Wilde does an excellent job with the narration. Her dynamic, expressive voice gives each of the characters a unique personality and attitude.
