Historia
A winter sunrise over the great plains of Russia is no cause for celebration. The temperature barely rises above zero, and the guards at Penal Colony IK22 are determined to take their misery out on the prisoners—chief among them, one Zoya Zakharova. Once a master spy for Russian foreign intelligence, then the partner and lover of the Gray Man, she has information the Kremlin wants, and they don't care what they have to do to get it.

Solid Entry to Series
Revisado: 04-03-25
I didn’t feel the last two were as strong as some of the other entries, but this one was quite well done. Still not surpassing “Six” as my favorite of the series, but well done.

Those sound effects…
Revisado: 01-29-25
Wonderful reinterpretation of the classic “hero’s journey”. Love the manhwa. Love the anime. Love the extra depth, detail, and texture of this audiobook adaptation. But… the narrator’s sound effects are just cringey. Lee does fine narrating text, but the poor guy desperately needed some sort of help with the sound effects!

“IT’S SHOWTIME.” The news has made headlines-"Korea and Japan join hands to exterminate the terrifying magic beasts on Jeju Island once and for all!” It’s a monumental moment for the people of the country…and it has absolutely nothing to do with Jinwoo. Instead, the newest S-rank hunter’s number one priority is bringing his recently recovered mother back home where she belongs at last. When the situation on Jeju Island takes a devastating turn for the worse, though, will the country's top hunters be strong enough to save the day without him?

Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Cute Short Story by Scalzi

Description gives you the general idea of what the story is about… it’s kind of a “day in the life of…” type of story, spread out over a week. It’s an exciting first week on the job too!

Since the 1970s, FantasticLand has been the theme park where "Fun is Guaranteed!" But when a hurricane ravages the Florida coast and isolates the park, the employees find it anything but fun. Five weeks later, the authorities who rescue the survivors encounter a scene of horror. Photos soon emerge online of heads on spikes outside of rides and viscera and human bones littering the gift shops, breaking records for hits, views, likes, clicks, and shares.

Interesting “Mock-journalism” Approach
Revisado: 10-02-24
It’s a premise of “something terrible happened” but it’s conveyed not as a story, but as a series of interviews with “the survivors”. Maybe not the best book I’ve listened too, but the approach was novel and the method utilized was enjoyable.
The (two) narrators did an excellent job. They each had a variety of voices and dialects to spread between the characters.

Historia
Andrew Yancy—late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office—has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig (it’s not called the roach patrol for nothing).

Revisado: 09-19-24
No real high drama and it’s not exactly a literary masterpiece, but it’s very enjoyable to listen to and manages to do a great job in capturing that uniquely “Florida vibe”.

Not fantasy, as labeled. Barely sci-fi. Focuses almost entirely upon social structures, interpersonal relationships, and what people will do when given license to act without consequence.
Enjoyed this book, a lot. Much more than I would have expected. Perhaps a new favorite now.

Historia
To survive the notorious prison IK-2 and assassinate Russian President Vladimir Petrov, John Dempsey had to become rosomakha, the wolverine. Now, back home in America, he’s trying to put the pieces of his life at Ember back together. But which man returned from Russia—Dempsey, or the wolverine? From the way his teammates look at him, it’s obvious they’re not sure, and neither is he. Meanwhile, Vice President Kelso Jarvis has barely had time to mourn the death of his mentor before a devastating attack reveals a new threat.

Great Tier One Story
Revisado: 07-04-24
If there is a Tier One character you like, they probably have a storyline in there somewhere. It captures the essence of everything we like in the Tier One novels, and delves into J.D.’s psyche post Russian prison too. Interesting new characters too. A&W had kind of left Tier One alone for a while, working on other projects. Dempsey didn’t feel like the previous entries to me. Good, but the parts that weren’t actually about Dempsey sometimes lacked the… IDK, passion? Love? Effort? As the previous entires. This one does; it delivers.

Really damn good with a wonderful ending.
Revisado: 06-24-24
In the lead-up to release, I was a bit concerned about all the 007 references (7th Jack Carr book) and some of the influences Carr sited. The concern was for naught. In the first obvious influence, Carr used the “lampshade” technique. Acknowledge the oddity, embrace it, and move on with control over the narrative. The other influences were more subtle. Don’t get me wrong, there is certainly clear Bond influence in parts and some clear nods to Flemming himself. If you know the genre, especially as a Gen Xer, you can also see influence from other writers with whom we grew up reading.
TL;DR- it’s a really good book. Very well done. Reese does new things and also does the things he is known for. Really like the ending too. Kind of hope Carr lets that one play out as is.

Very good, though slightly predictable
Revisado: 02-23-24
One of the best Grey Man books. Sierra Six is still my favorite, but this is better than Burner, and definitely better than anything prior to Back Blast.
This plot has been done before. There are a couple of unique twists, but mostly it’s an interesting story of a familiar “bogeyman”. All modern thriller writers need to do a deadly pandemic story, a hacker story, a Middle East despot story, a nuclear disaster averted story, a Russian dictator threat story, and an AI story.
This is Greaney’s AI story and it’s done well. It’s largely relatable and largely plausible. Definitely worth listening to/reading. Definitely recommend for Gray Man fans. Probably among Greaney’s 5 best Gray Man stories.
