The series is wonderful! Charming characters, an ever-evolving narrative focus, and deeper dives into the world add up to a great adventure. The first book is indoctrination, the second book is immersion, the third book is mystery, and the fourth book is revelation. Science, philosophy, and spirituality are all given the spotlight and the very balance of existence is addressed in a beautiful fashion. The performance by Emma Fenney is enchanting and I especially liked her rendition of Farouk, Ophelia, and Thorn. At times it felt like my years of personal intellectual pursuits had finally been captured in a gripping and mind-bending circumstance in a familiar but exaggerated world. The last book was literary bliss and my predictions were on track but the truth was so much better than expected. The story is mirror upon itself, and it is a reflection upon the soul of the people. I heard it through the public library and then purchased it afterward. I don't know if I would have heard about it otherwise! Eternally grateful for your thoughts, words, and dreams, Christelle Dabos!

SPOILERS BUT MOSTLY GENERAL NOT SPECIFIC...STILL BE WARNED

Series starts strong, and DJ is good at giving a tour of a whole society in a few encounters, just enough to reveal what Saint Dane (vaguely communist pseudo villain) is doing. Bobby must always be in the dark and so must the reader. By this point it feels like the other stories weren't much more than plot to drive the stories that happen after the territories were visited. The traveler powers do expand the technical scope of the story but the worlds are so similar to ours it could have honestly been the three earth books and maybe two books of jetting around and battling across the territories, because again, all the characters feel like lessons for Bobby to learn and Saint Dane (D.J.?) impersonates more people than perhaps all the travelers combined. There's some rather strange setups by Saint Dane and his cooky cronies, with that classic societal lecturing he's grown fond of. Old stories are mentioned and that's about it. I recommend reading about past civilizations and historical events, as well as pursuing philosophy if the premise of the series intrigued you. Yes I'm a good deal older now after reading the first six, but other young adult novels do not age simply because I'm not that age. I've actually started new young adult series and have enjoyed them quite a lot. I think the scope simply became too big and the original shine gave way to random encounters that can fill the book, but that also made things quite predictable in the overall direction and the stakes are non-existent because the philosophy undermines tension by bringing in real world dilemmas that get resolved with space magic.
