Historia
The next book in the perennially adored No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series sees Precious Ramotswe calling upon all her maternal instincts when she's faced with a two-ton case. They say it takes a village to raise a child, but can Mma. Ramotswe and the rest of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency come together to raise a pipsqueak pachyderm? We may find out in this novel. We may not. Who can say?

Terrible character voices
Revisado: 06-09-23
I love this series, but this was extremely difficult to listen to with the new narrator’s distracting and terrible approach to the character voices. Buyer beware.

Historia
Christmas is a very special time of year. It is special for Psychic Nan Killian and Medium Sarah Lyon-White and their ward, Suki, who are determined to celebrate it properly. It is special for their friends, Doctor John Watson, and his wife, Mary, both Elemental Masters, who have found great delight in the season seeing it through young Suki's eyes. It is also special to others...for very different reasons. For Christmas Eve is also hallowed to dark forces, powers older than mankind, powers that come awake on this, the Longest Night. Powers best left alone.

Trauma warning - reader beware
Revisado: 03-22-23
Warning: this story is largely told from the perspective of a sadistic rapist and murderer. Absolutely nauseating stretches of the book detail abduction and torture. Have enjoyed previous Elemental Masters books but this was a terrible experience.

Historia
It's a time for getting cozy in front of whisky barrel wood fires and enjoying a dram and a treacle pudding with the people you love - unless, of course, you've accidentally gotten pregnant by your ex-boss and don't know how to tell him. In the season for peace and good cheer, will Flora find the nerve to reveal the truth to her nearest and dearest? Will her erstwhile co-parent, Joel, think she’s the bearer of glad tidings - or is this Christmas going to be as bleak as the Highlands in midwinter?

Please don’t do this to yourself
Revisado: 11-23-19
[Spoiler alert]. This is the worst “Christmas story” I have ever read. Seriously, please don’t do this to yourself. An agonizing death from cancer, a woman being tortured in Syria, threatened miscarriage, grieving Syrian children, on and on. It is terrible. Even the supposed romantic parts are incredibly painful. A man cheats on the wife he supposedly loves who is presumed imprisoned in war-torn Syria, with a woman whose incredibly unhealthy obsession with him is uncomfortable to witness. An emotionally immature former foster child stonewalls his pregnant girlfriend, returning to her side only when miscarriage appears imminent. Seriously guys, this is miserable stuff. And to make it worse, the writing is not stellar. Multiple errors/contradictions (in an earlier book therapist didn’t adopt Joel because of the needs of Marsha’s young children, in this book it is a huge thing how the therapist and his wife are childless, etc). Tediously repetitive descriptions (seriously if Flora was described as pale one more time I was going to throw the thing across the room). Poorly paced, abrupt ending. The sense of place and community is nice, and there are some redemptive threads running through, but seriously, the few positives are not worth the discomfort. Find something else to read!

Historia
There have been many books - on a large and small scale - about Steve Jobs, one of the most famous CEOs in history. But this book is different from all the others. Becoming Steve Jobs takes on and breaks down the existing myth and stereotypes about Steve Jobs. The conventional, one-dimensional view of Jobs is that he was half genius, half jerk from youth, an irascible and selfish leader who slighted friends and family alike.

Inspired by Steve
Revisado: 04-23-15
I miss Steve Job even more. His brilliance is rare. His history is full of connected dots that could not have been predicted. This narrative opened my eye more to who Steve was.
