Truly amazing science, imagination, characters and plot. Best thing I've listened to this year! Looking up the next installment now.

Unique perspective of a young Chinese-American woman who gains access to sides of Tibet that most western observers could never come to know--including a great interaction with the Dalai Lama!

I'm coming back to write this review several months after finishing this book. The narration is superb in almost all places, and the stories by some of today's top writers are just stunning. I can truly say that now, many months after finishing the book, I find myself driving along in my car and suddenly unable to think about anything except one or another of these highly original and inventive tales. Even a knowledgeable Holmes fan will find fresh insights and weird alarums and diversions that you never could have imagined. Outstanding merger of a classic foundation and brilliant new imaginations.

Red Mars--the saga begins

If you like real science in your science fiction instead of hand-waving and "magic," Robinson delivers incredible homework behind everything from the beanstalk space elevator to the climate on Mars. The characters are diverse, believable and interesting, and the plot twists around in ways that will rivet you in your seat as you listen. The narration is first-rate. My only gripe is that somebody (the publishers? Robinson himself?) "lifted" one particular episode out of the middle of the story and stuck it on as the prologue at the very beginning--I did NOT appreciate that artificial piece of awkward editing, and wish that episode had come in its proper chronological place. Once you get past that and get into the narrative from the beginning, the story settles down and really takes hold of you. The way the tension and surprises build towards the climactic end of this first volume are particularly memorable. So don't be deterred by the first little section. Not sure why they put that at the front end.

The text is sophomoric trash with a shrill but shallow tone. Right wing macho nonsense lacks style or any real characters. Doubt whether I'll look at any other free Audible features if this is a sample of what you're passing off on us.

Especially for those "in the know" in NYC

Would you try another book from Salman Rushdie and/or Vikas Adam?

No

What do you think your next listen will be?

Jody Shields. The Winter Station.

Have you listened to any of Vikas Adam’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No

Do you think The Golden House needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I expect that Rushdie's books are very diverse, and each one is unique. This one, however, is so claustrophobically confined to the "in crowd" in New York City for most of its duration that if this rarified social context doesn't resonate with you, it will be like taking an anthropology field trip with a lot of characters that are unsympathetic and at times not terribly believable. The narrator is the only character remotely approaching a "normal" person from a normal background, but he is like a limp pennant fluttering in the humid breeze stirred up by everybody else in the story.

Any additional comments?

The diverse population of New York City doubtless will enjoy this story very much, and recognize many of the landmarks and personalities that make cameos in the book.

If you could sum up The Silk Roads in three words, what would they be?

Centered on Asia

Would you recommend The Silk Roads to your friends? Why or why not?

I would recommend this book as a good balance to the many excellent histories of western civilization. The focus on the great Eurasian land mass through the centuries (or millennia!) in many ways is a truer focus on the "center of gravity" of the human race. Doubtless a lot of Chinese people will really enjoy this book!

Have you listened to any of Laurence Kennedy’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No

Any additional comments?
