Historia
Pocket has been Lear's cherished fool for years. So naturally Pocket is at his brainless, elderly liege's side when Lear demands that his kids swear to him their undying love and devotion. Of course Goneril and Regan are only too happy to brownnose Dad. But Cordelia believes that her father's request is kind of...well...stupid, and her blunt honesty ends up costing her her rightful share of the kingdom and earns her a banishment to boot.

One of my favorites ever
Revisado: 11-06-09
In preparing to write this review I realized that I've listened to over 170 audible titles. This one stands out for both the narrator and the quality of the writing. The main character is "Pocket" and his jests and insults are extraordinarily creative and laugh out loud funny. Irreverent does not begin to describe his language and behavior.

My First Stephen King
Revisado: 03-22-07
I've watched a couple of King movies and they've been okay but I've never read any of his stuff. I am extremely glad that I read the other reviews for this title. This was a tremendous book. The characters were all well developed and believable. The narrator did a great job with the different voices. Now I'll have to see the movie to see if it's even close to this good.

Historia
At Lyme Regis on the Dorset coast, a young Victorian amateur palaentologist, Charles Smithson, is struck by a solitary figure standing at the far end of the Cobb, staring out to sea. It is Sarah Woodruff, known to the locals as 'poor Tragedy' since her apparent liaison with a French sailor who has since deserted her. Although Charles is already engaged to a young heiress, he is immediately beguiled and eventually infatuated with Sarah.

As an audible listener for a number of years I have found that books of this length (over 17 hours) have the great potential of becoming tedious. This is NOT one of them. As other reviewers have mentioned this is a book that will keep you interested throughout, both because of the story itself, but also because of the narration. And the author's tendency to let the reader into his own mind and to understand the choices he makes in telling the story are quite engaging. One of the best aspects is not being able to quite predict what will happen next, even up to the very end.

Interesting, but a bit tedious
Revisado: 05-05-06
We bought this title to listen to with our 2 teenaged sons. They liked it a lot, particularly when the action was going on. But at times the character whose viewpoint we are hearing from becomes tedious. She goes on a bit long as she tries to examine the relationships among the book's characters. In fairness, we have purchased the 2nd title and are enjoying it as well, although the same criticism applies to it. In my opinion, that's what makes it a 4 and not 5.

On the outer banks of the Carolinas in 1941, fishermen and a few lonely sailors constitute the human population. Dominating the rough yet beautiful landscape is the majestic Killakeet Lighthouse, run for generations by the Thurlow family. But Josh Thurlow, the lighthouse keeper's son, has forsworn his heritage to become the commander of a small Coast Guard patrol boat. Tortured by twenty years of guilt for losing his brother at sea, Josh still searches for him.

LIke a movie script
Revisado: 05-05-06
Although the story has some interesting parallel plots and the reader does a passable job, the longer I listened to this book, the more I pictured the author writing for the big screen. I did not find the characters to be particularly believable, in fact, they turned out to be extremely stereotypical and easy to picture. I found myself predicting the plot's "twist" very early on. I gave this a 3 because it's entertaining, mindless listening and the recording is good quality. But I'd prefer to give it a 2.5. There are way better audio selections to choose from.

So begins a wild trail of lies and concealments, soaring hopes and sudden panics as Martin embarks on an obsessive quest to prove his hunch and resolve one of the great mysteries of European art.

Disappointing
Revisado: 03-13-06
After readying the publisher's summary I was ready for "biting wit" and "entertainment of the highest order". What I got was numerous long, dreary art history lessons, and a mild dose of drama, but very little biting wit. I generally love anything that Frederick Davidson reads but not even he could bring this one out of the dumps.

An outstanding listen!
Revisado: 12-22-05
The narrator took a little time to get used to but the story pulls you in from the very beginning. The author does a great job of educating the listener about the dangers of deep wreck diving by weaving this information into the details of the hunt for the identify of the sub. This really is a great listen.

Revisado: 05-03-05
After reading other reviews we decided to give "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" a try. Not only is the story line unique and well-written but the audio is extremely well done by the reader. We're now in the second of the "No. 1" series, "Tears of the Giraffe" and have every intention of listening to all of them. We're also researching a trip to Botswana as a result of these books.
