Historia
Sarat Chestnut, born in Louisiana, is only six when the Second American Civil War breaks out in 2074. But even she knows that oil is outlawed, that Louisiana is half underwater, that unmanned drones fill the sky. And when her father is killed and her family is forced into Camp Patience for displaced persons, she quickly begins to be shaped by her particular time and place until, finally, through the influence of a mysterious functionary, she is turned into a deadly instrument of war.

Dark Story In a Fascinating, Haunting Future
Revisado: 01-08-24
There were several parts of the book I had to skip because I can't handle that kind of violence, but I couldn't stop reading ir because the setting in the U.S. in the next hundred years is absolutely fascinating and terrifying.

Historia
We know the universe had a beginning. With the Big Bang, it expanded from a state of unimaginable density to an all-encompassing cosmic fireball to a simmering fluid of matter and energy, laying down the seeds for everything from black holes to one rocky planet orbiting a star near the edge of a spiral galaxy that happened to develop life as we know it. But what happens to the universe at the end of the story? And what does it mean for us now?

Mind Twisting in the Best Way
Revisado: 02-09-22
Be prepared to hit rewind and run that by yourself one more time, a lot. Katie Mack is witty and sarcastic and fully aware that this is the nerdiest thing you've read since school and that the science behind all of it is most likely way over your head. She manages to explain some very complicated theories in terms we can at least somewhat follow and laughs with us had how absurd and mind-blowing it all is. I am in awe of the folks that study these things, and it's nice to have one of those scientists sit down and share it with the rest of us.

Historia
Humans, unlike other animals that are drawn to water, are not natural-born swimmers. We must be taught. Our evolutionary ancestors learned for survival; now in the 21st century, we swim in freezing Arctic waters and piranha-infested rivers to test our limits. Swimming is an introspective and silent sport in a chaotic and noisy age; it’s therapeutic for both the mind and body; and it's an adventurous way to get from point A to point B. It's also one route to that elusive, ecstatic state of flow.

A Love Affair with Water
Revisado: 07-10-21
Bonnie Tsui puts into words the feelings and connections I've felt with water and swimming my whole life. It was validating to hear someone else talk like this. The book also looks at ideas and history connected to water that I hadn't considered before. Many of the stories are delightful and inspiring, others somber and mindful. It's a survey of some of the most incredible ways in which humans relate to water.

Pure motivation to me...
Revisado: 06-24-16
A wonderful example of a woman who tears down, heals, and rebuilds herself. Her career makes me so jealous, but everything else is so human, so down to earth. And though we differ on a few spiritual beliefs, her story is so worth hearing. It's pure motivation to love yourself and take care of yourself and take drastic measures to get where you need to be mentally and spiritually.
