Historia
Born under a hunter's moon, abandoned as a child, I was raised to be a powerful sorceress - okay, a mediocre sorceress. All right, I'm good at glamour and can make things sparkle, if my spells don't backfire. It was foretold long ago that I was a child of prophecy that would unite the fae and humans of Candor. The only problem, no one told me, and now the king wants me dead. For I am Eden, one of the adoptive daughters of Lady Eville, and I have to attend the royal masquerade ball - not to win a prince, but to avenge my parents. Even if it means pretending to be a fairy godmother....

No need to make the house servants "brown"
Revisado: 03-17-25
I liked the story, but saw no need to make the house servants whose tongues had been removed the only brown-skinned characters in the book. There was no need to mention skin color at all.

Needs polishing
Revisado: 03-17-25
Both the writing and the narration need polish. There are grammatical issues sprinkled throughout the book. Not so many that the story is unclear, but enough to be noticeable. The mercurial emotions of the protagonist should be more subtly presented. The women are presented with super strong emotions. These should be more realistic

Good story but weak ending
Revisado: 03-13-25
The story is likable. There were a few too many characters and friendships and frenimies to follow, but that added some complexity. The ending was a bit weak

Please be careful. Please be happy. And please forget all about me. It’ll be better for everyone that way. Those were the last words Keefe Sencen wrote to Sophie Foster before he ran away to the Forbidden Cities. He didn’t want to leave, but it was the only way to keep his friends safe while he figured out how to control his scary new powers and searched for answers about his past. What he found was so much more than adventures in Humanland.

Slow story
Revisado: 01-24-25
The story moved very slowly. I appreciate filling in some gaps, but believe this could have been added to another book, rather than try to have it stand alone. The narration was overly energetic which did not make up for a slow story featuring tedious dialogue

Narration is not good. Length is well overstated
Revisado: 01-15-25
I enjoy the story quite a bit. It is full of magic and fae and good vs. evil. The narration is not good. The teen protagonist is whiny. The mother/powerful witch sounds like she is exhausted on the point of dropping. The narration is so terribly slow that I have had to play it at 1.30 just to reach a reasonable conversation pace. This has been true for books 2 and 3 of the series. So a 10-hour performance is really more like 7-hours. Not the best for a full credit.

Too slow
Revisado: 12-16-24
The story starts out very slow and dreary due to a combination of language and narration. It put me in the mind of a black and white detective show.

Terribly behaved children with no adult guidance
Revisado: 10-22-24
This is the third story I have read in the series. I am very disappointed in the storyline. The behavior of half of the children is selfish and perhaps even malicious. The adults do not provide correction or guidance. This is not a story I want any children I care about to read.

Nice story for middle grade children
Revisado: 08-18-24
The story is a nice one, if a bit derivative. Children likely won't mind that. The main character experiences some modicum of growth, but there are a number of instances in which his plans and level of understanding rapidly shift back and forward.

Nice story for middle grade children
Revisado: 08-17-24
The story is good for middle grade children. It is complete with aspiration, self-doubt, jealousy, family love, friendship, bad decisions, and lots of love. The angsty thoughts and introspections and unwillingness to seek help with a problem go on a bit too long.

Historia
Jade believes she must get out of her neighborhood if she's ever going to succeed. Her mother says she has to take every opportunity. She has. She accepted a scholarship to a mostly-white private school and even Saturday morning test prep opportunities. But some opportunities feel more demeaning than helpful. Like an invitation to join Women to Women, a mentorship program for "at-risk" girls. Except really, it's for black girls. From "bad" neighborhoods. But maybe there are some things Jade could show these successful women about the real world and finding ways to make a real difference.

Wonderfully authentic
Revisado: 08-04-24
This story evoked so many memories of my own childhood. The writing is exquisite. The main characters are real and complex, shallow and deep, angry and forgiving and joyful. This is a book that I wish I'd had growing up to help put voice to some of my youthful thoughts. Well done!
