What didn’t you like about Sartaj Gerewal’s performance?
The ordinary narration is okay, but all the character voices are done in a whining melodramatic warble, as though reading a children's book (or on the Simpsons). Distracted from the story and tone.

Historia
Manjunath Kumar is 14 and living in a slum in Mumbai. He knows he is good at cricket - if not as good as his older brother, Radha. He knows that he fears and resents his domineering and cricket-obsessed father, admires his brilliantly talented sibling, and is fascinated by curious scientific facts and the world of CSI. But there are many things, about himself and about the world, that he doesn't know. Sometimes it even seems as though everyone has a clear idea of who Manju should be except Manju himself.

Cartoonish narration
Revisado: 01-22-18
Would you be willing to try another one of Sartaj Garewal’s performances?
I really don't like this narrator, whom I try to avoid, and who made this novel sound like an episode of South Park. It's a satirical novel, not an idiotic one. Are there no other South Asian voice actors?

Historia
Young Pip Tyler doesn't know who she is. She knows that her real name is Purity, that she's saddled with $130,000 in student debt, that she's squatting with anarchists in Oakland, and that her relationship with her mother - her only family - is hazardous. But she doesn't have a clue who her father is, why her mother chose to live as a recluse with an invented name, or how she'll ever have a normal life.

Worth it just for Dylan Baker
Revisado: 02-27-16
Any additional comments?
The novel is just okay. However the middle section, which deals with a troubled marriage and is read by the incomparable Dylan Baker, is brilliant -- worth hearing just on its own. There's an abridged version of The Corrections also read by Baker: highly recommended.

The individuals who live within this extraordinary first novel are: Regan and William Hamilton-Sweeney, estranged heirs to one of the city's largest fortunes; Keith and Mercer, the men who, for better or worse, love them; Charlie and Samantha, two suburban teenagers seduced by downtown's punk scene; an obsessive magazine reporter and his idealistic neighbor; and the detective trying to figure out what any of them have to do with a shooting in Central Park.

Great main narrator, great novel

Loved the main narrator -- felt annoyed with the "interludes," because they were not narrated nearly as feelingly. The novel is dense, a bit over-written, but beautiful. It's light on plot but I enjoyed the slow ride.

Historia
Spanning 30 years, The Green Road tells the story of Rosaleen, matriarch of the Madigans, a family on the cusp of either coming together or falling irreparably apart. As they grow up, Rosaleen's four children leave the west of Ireland for lives they could have never imagined in Dublin, New York, and Mali, West Africa. In her early old age, their difficult, wonderful mother announces that she's decided to sell the house and divide the proceeds.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?
The female narrator was spectacular! The Irish male narrator was much weaker (3 stars), less nuance and more sing-song-y. The American voice was great also.
Any additional comments?
Nearly didn't get this because of the negative reviews. This is easily one of the best books I've read this year. Literature for adults! My previous read was "The Marriage of Opposites," which is much more highly rated on Audible, but not even in the same league as this. Wish it had been longer.

Historia
The hero of Hanif Kureishi's debut novel is a dreamy teenager, desperate to escape suburban South London and experience the forbidden fruits which the 1970s seem to offer. When the unlikely opportunity of a life in the theatre announces itself, Karim starts to win the sort of attention he has been craving, albeit with some rude and raucous results.

Terrible production quality
Revisado: 03-09-14
Any additional comments?
Audio is fuzzy and static-y. More annoying is the constant sound of people talking in the background, very distracting if you're listening on headphones. There are no pauses between chapters, so it feels as though we launch into the next chapter seemingly mid-sentence! Different sections of the audio sound markedly different, so different it seems like a different narrator has taken over. The narration itself is fine but the sloppy production quality made this very, very hard going for me. Do not buy.

Historia
On the morning of December 26, 2004, on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, Sonali Deraniyagala lost her parents, her husband, and her two young sons in the tsunami she miraculously survived. In this brave and searingly frank memoir, she describes those first horrifying moments and her long journey since. She has written an engrossing, unsentimental, beautifully poised account: as she struggles through the first months following the tragedy, furiously clenched against a reality that she cannot face and cannot deny....

A personal account of devastating set of events, but not a well-conceived book. The author's grief is overwhelming but not a cathartic reading experience. There's no story, and not much of a compelling emotional arc.

A brilliant writer matched with my favorite Audible reader. I wish Audible had someone like Andoh for its South Asian selection.
