Just like I said, dammit. Funny as hell! Come on, Audible. I can't be writing a longer review. I'm trying to drive here.

I seriously had to walk away from it a few times because it's so on-the-nose. I have hundreds of stories exactly like these.

Trump's own words betray him

The unmistakable conclusion from this book- and this is largely due to the verbatim interviews- is that Trump's narcissistic behavior makes him LITERALLY incapable of being a public servant, let alone leader of the free world. At times, it's conical. Mostly, though, it's scary. Woodward starts illuminating this principle with the stories of Mattis and Coats; but the last third of the book shows us Trump's mind at work. In print, his deflections and attention deficits in conversion are on display in real time, in stark contrast to anyone who would (I think naturally) empathetically understand his or her role in the world as president. It is, frankly, frightening. It's like listening in on a therapy session; only the patient has the ability to walk out of the office and end the world.

if you're looking for a primer on Grant, it's fine; but this is sloppily produced. There are weird skips, and obvious factual errors and "huh?!" moments in the narration here. The most notable is at the end when it says Grant finished his memoirs July 18th, and then died July 13th.

If you've read Comey's book, or McCabe's, or Woodward, or even Wolff's book(s), you already know most of what people inside the Executive say about Trump. All of those cover the same greatest hits as this:

-He didn't expect to win
-He really doesn't know anything about being a public servant or government
-He lies a LOT, so much that it paralyzes other facets of government
-He runs things like a mob boss
-He might be mentally ill

If you haven't read the others, this is a pretty quick and easy primer into some of those ideas. I try to be an avid reader of all contemporary political books, and I guess I find it alarming that SO MANY of them say the same things about this man; but if you were looking for any new information as to whether or not to vote for him, you can probably skip this. The only additional viewpoint is that Trump is really a reflection of the electorate (which I agree with), and that changing him for another politician will not solve the real problem that threatens our country; we need to get back to a more recent and democratic agreement of our national roots, our history, and our responsible discourse.

It's a book Republicans would love, despite most of these concepts proven wrong over time.

If you work in the business world, this will be chock full of incredible ideas that will change not only your career, but your life. If you're someone who works with the public (cops, teachers, retail, service industry), or if you're just a decent person, all of this will have you screaming "No shit!" at the top of your lungs.

The thing that struck me most about this book is the importance of context. James Comey, maybe more than any public figure I can think of in recent memory, has been scrutinized by the public, pundits, and politicians of all kinds. Our tribal nature has made him, at one point or another, an "enemy" of everyone. But this book, and especially his reading of it, showcase the man behind the controversy. It details not just THAT these (now famous) events and decisions occurred, but WHY. It's a rich and emotional biography that should (at least to any objective reader) explain how he arrived at his decisions, reacted to the results of them, and the strain it placed on him in the meantime. The book really is about the title: this man holds himself, for various lengthy reasons he explains from his past, to a higher loyalty to truth. And, when that is the case, there is a grey area to making choices that I think is lost when you simply hear sound bites instead of listening to the whole thing.

I'm sure people have already noted this is not the book itself; but as someone who will download and listen to any interview or podcast with Chuck Klosterman, I found it very enjoyable nonetheless.

I consider listening to this a personal accomplishment. If I was gonna listen to someone read me the Bible, it was gonna be James Earle Jones, or Johnny Cash. Glad I went with Johnny.
