Historia
As a panicked world goes into lockdown, Lucy Barton is uprooted from her life in Manhattan and bundled away to a small town in Maine by her ex-husband and on-again, off-again friend, William. For the next several months, it’s just Lucy, William, and their complex past together in a little house nestled against the moody, swirling sea. Rich with empathy and emotion, Lucy by the Sea vividly captures the fear and struggles that come with isolation, as well as the hope, peace, and possibilities that those long, quiet days can inspire.

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Cloud Couckoo Land will amaze you and make bring tears
Revisado: 05-08-22
I was prepared to dislike this novel. Too many points of view. Biting off too much. Addressing over two thousand years of human history. Space travel? The Korean War? Climate change? Over the hours of listening the weavers threads pulled true and the story cloth showed fascinating design upon design. Laughter, tears, anger, exhaustion, foolishness, cruelty and more appeared brought forth by great oral storytelling. I found the novel to my liking.
Come, stranger. You, too, may appreciate listening to this foolishness!

Historia
In August 2014 Jenny Diski was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and given 'two or three years' to live. She didn't know how to react. All responses felt scripted, laden with cliché. Being a writer, she decided to write about it (grappling with the unoriginality even of this) and to tell a story she had not yet told: that of being taken in, aged 15, by the author Doris Lessing and the subsequent 50 years of their complex relationship.

Jenny's writing will astonish you
Revisado: 07-19-21
Jenny Diski's birthday is July 8, 1947. Very near mine. But she is dead and, I am alive. There is no explaining that fact. But, Jenny, in her book, In Gratitude, explains 🤔many things. Her goal, achieved, was to write truthfully. If you like truthful writing, as I do, you will appreciate this book. (Please note: I did not say you would like this book.)

Tough story about tough people in Okla
Revisado: 07-15-21
The sexual proclivities described in this book drive the mystery, the suspense, the relationships and the need to keep turning pages. The author makes the case for tolerance and the suspension of judgment of others sexual desires. The book is well written but not for everyone.

The reader provides a great performance with dramatic voices including the twang of Tennessee and the posh accents of New England. The author paints a vivid picture of the deep inequalities of a country gripped by the Depression and a couple determined to make their mark in this unforgiving America. Poetry, tragedy and heroism appear to capture our imagination.

God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

Historia
Winter lasts most of the year at the edge of the Russian wilderness, and in the long nights, Vasilisa and her siblings love to gather by the fire to listen to their nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, Vasya loves the story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon. Wise Russians fear him, for he claims unwary souls, and they honor the spirits that protect their homes from evil. Then Vasya’s widowed father brings home a new wife from Moscow. Fiercely devout, Vasya’s stepmother forbids her family from honoring their household spirits, but Vasya fears what this may bring.

Fantasy novel of fundamentalism vs naturalism
Revisado: 12-08-20
Stellar combination of Russian folklore/mythology combined with conflict between dogma and tolerance. The story is fast-paced, while engaging the reader in issues that vibrate with today's newspaper headlines. This is a great book to listen to with Russian accents in a variety of female and male voices. I highly recommend it!
