Didn’t want it to end.
Revisado: 07-29-24
Loved the setting, the characters, the story! I am, however, one of those who ‘sees’ the story in my mind as I read or listen. I had a small issue with the geography of the setting, as I couldn’t figure out how one could see the volcano out over the lake but later it seemed to be behind the hotel. That is the only negative thing about this wonderful book.

Historia
Dorothy Moy breaks her own heart for a living. As Washington’s former poet laureate, that’s how she describes channeling her dissociative episodes and mental health struggles into her art. But when her five-year-old daughter exhibits similar behavior and begins remembering things from the lives of their ancestors, Dorothy believes the past has come to haunt her. Fearing that her child is predestined to endure the same debilitating depression that has marked her own life, Dorothy seeks radical help.

Gave up about an hour in.

I tried to like this, but it was too disjointed for me. It jumps from person to person in the timeline, and required too much
concentration for a pleasurable listen for me.

Historia
In April 1975, Ralph White was asked by his boss to transfer from the Bangkok branch of the Chase Manhattan Bank to the Saigon Branch. He was tasked with closing the branch if and when it appeared that Saigon would fall to the North Vietnamese army and ensure the safety of the senior Vietnamese employees. But when he arrived, he realized the situation in Saigon was far more perilous than he had imagined. The senior staff members there urged him to evacuate the entire staff of the branch and their families, which was far more than he was authorized to do.

Historia
Aged just seven, Suzanne Heywood set sail with her parents and brother on a three-year voyage around the world. What followed turned instead into a decade-long way of life, through storms, shipwrecks, reefs and isolation, with little formal schooling. No one else knew where they were most of the time and no state showed any interest in what was happening to the children. Suzanne fought her parents, longing to return to England and to education and stability. This memoir covers her astonishing upbringing.

More than a coming-of-age, it's an adventure.
Revisado: 12-20-23
This checked a couple of boxes for me: adventure/travel, and family dynamics. I identified strongly with the author, who had a struggle growing up under a controlling father and an emotionally cruel mother. My father was emotionally cruel and I felt Sue's frustration and loneliness.
This book may not be for some, but I was captivated.

Historia
England, 1943: Home is no longer safe for eight-year-old twins Molly and Jacob. Night after night, wailing bombs and screeching planes skim the rooftops overhead. They cradle each other, shivering in terror, not knowing if they'll live to see dawn. Their mother, Martha, has no choice but to evacuate them to the safety of the countryside. At the train station, Martha bites back tears as she says good-bye to her precious children. Knowing she might never see them again, she gives Jacob a letter, pressing the envelope into his hands and telling him to only read it if they are in danger.

I found the story interesting, but the characters shallow. I almost gave up a couple of times, but the story did keep me wondering what happens to the children in the end, so I listened. Just ..okay.

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

I love reading and listening to books, and this one is a gem. I hated that it ended. This is the story of a family, and life's twists and turns for them. I won't give away the story, but this is a great read-or listen.

Loved this novel, though I didn't expect to!
Revisado: 06-16-19
I loved this novel, and was sad when it ended. If you have ever had any interest in Greek mythology, this is a great book.
The narrator is wonderful..she makes each and every character unique and interesting. To sum it up, Miller takes most of the characters in Greek mythology and weaves their stories into Circe's life as a goddess. I just enjoyed every minute.
Thank you, Madeline Miller and Perdita Weeks.
