Historia
My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me. So begins a tale told from his own point of view - a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

Historia
Nathan Treeves is dead, murdered by the Master of Mordew, his remains used to create the powerful occult weapon known as the Tinderbox. His companions are scattered, making for Malarkoi, the city of the Mistress, the Master’s enemy. They are hoping to find welcome there, or at least safety. They find neither—and instead become embroiled in a life and death struggle against assassins, demi-gods, and the cunning plans of the Mistress.

Absolutely Incredible In Every Sense
Revisado: 10-30-23
This book, “Malarkoi” being the sequel to 2020’s excellent “Mordew” and the second in “The Cities Of The Weft” Trilogy, was even more compelling, heart-wrenching, and thought provoking than it’s predecessor. Through the deft use of a mind-bending magic system, beautifully written philosophic prose, and a pinch of Weft mysticism-this book held me in its treachery-soaked grip with a vengeance. Just like Mordew, Malarkoi plays at events still to come, and built simultaneously along with its narrative, an anticipation for the final book in the trilogy that burns with a fervor so intense-I can only compare it to the fervor with which we all wait for Patrick Rothfuss’ third installment of “The Kingkiller Chronicles”. Malarkoi is unforgiving, Malarkoi is bleak, Malarkoi is malicious…and I loved every second of it. If you’re looking for the next phenomenon of Potter-esque levels, READ THIS BOOK SERIES IMMEDIATELY. It is vastly unknown/underrated currently so get in on the ground floor, and for the love of GOD DOG, talk to me about it. My friends don’t know what I’m talking about.

Thalassophobia & Claustrophobia’s Meet Cute
Revisado: 10-23-23
Trigger Warning: This book will fuel your thalassophobic and claustrophobic nightmares simultaneously.
Take the impossible survival situation found within Andy Weir’s “The Martian” combined with the cloying, pressing horror of the alien digestion scene from Jordan Peele’s “Nope” - and place it under our terrestrial Pacific Ocean, tangled in the depth-probing hunting tentacles of a giant squid, within the acrid digestive gases of a sperm whale’s first of four stomachs. This is only the beginning of “Whalefall”.
A book concerning grief and the tribulations of its eventual acceptance, our own infinitesimal mortality, our lifelong familial correspondence and inevitable merging with all the beauty contained within the natural world, and a son’s relationship to his difficult and distant recently deceased father.
I absolutely loved this book. Props to Eva Anderson for discussing it in passing on The Doughboys Podcast. A podcast not even about books, but about chain restaurants.
Having lost my father at a young age, I found the book’s dissection of grief difficult at times, but ultimately rewarding and emotionally cathartic.
If you’re looking for a quick and horrifying read that will instill new or reinforce old fears and respect for the ocean, read “Whalefall”.

Another great Holly Gibney novel. Maybe the best yet, and Justine Lupe is an amazing narrator. Even the character voices she employs sound natural, and yet completely unlike her simultaneously. 5/5 Stars.

An Absolute Comedic Masterpiece From Horror’s Foremost Premier Scribe.
Revisado: 02-27-23
If you’re at all familiar with “Garth Marenghi’s ‘Darkplace’ “, you’ll know full well what you’re getting yourself into. If not, do yourself a favor and sit down for six episodes on Amazon Prime. You’ll be glad you did. Though it is not necessary to fully enjoy this masterpiece. I laughed raucously so often at this Audiobook, that I was prohibited from further listening while working. Matthew Holn-I mean, Garth Marenghi is an absolute genius of our time.

This book was absolutely phenomenal. The language used, the narration in various voices, the darker than pitch story itself! Can’t wait for the second book to be released in the US. I may even end up paying the UK shipping rate so I can continue posthaste!

Narration Is Phenomenal, Everything Else…Less So.
Revisado: 01-09-23
I did enjoy this in parts. The narrative was relatively gripping early on, yet as the story wound on, we’re introduced to characters-especially villains; that are 1-dimensional personifications of their negative motivations. I was very pleased with the queer-representation in the two main characters, as it’s a perspective I don’t often read in books. But the constant apologetic conversations and “will they, won’t they” tensions isn’t enough to propel this story to a satisfying climax. The change in tone of voice and characterization by the narrator was the best part of this book. I knew distinctly who was speaking every step of the way.

Historia
In the town of Night Vale, there’s a faceless old woman who secretly lives in everyone’s home, but no one knows how she got there or where she came from...until now. Told in a series of eerie flashbacks, the story of The Faceless Old Woman goes back centuries to reveal an initially blissful and then tragic childhood on a Mediterranean Estate in the early 19th century, her rise in the criminal underworld of Europe, a nautical adventure with a mysterious organization of smugglers, her plot for revenge on the ones who betrayed her, and ultimately her death and its aftermath.

Matilda Kills It!!!
Revisado: 05-16-21
Mara Wilson read this beautifully-written book EXTREMELY well. This character was perfect for her, and I absolutely felt every emotion described. Especially the last monologue. It was so chilling that I broke out in goosebumps at work as she spoke each breath-stopping word! Can’t wait to check out the other Nightvale books, and this will definitely bring me back to the podcast after a couple years of hiatus! Just fantastic.

Absolutely excellent story and world building!
Revisado: 03-28-21
Well-written and well-read high fantasy. The world's establishment is crafted with a deft hand and is never bogged down with tedious detail. When thrown up against her contemporaries, Shannon excels in ways that Martin, Tolkien, and Rothfuss do not. (I say this as a fan of these authors.) Leaving behind the lens of minute detail and meaningless sex/violence for a better-paced world of gender balance, queer acceptance, and an incredibly fierce female-led cast that yields a much-needed breath of fresh air and a welcome new voice for the fantasy genre. Aside from a few mispronunciations from the reader-which in no way effect the overall experience-I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and will be on the lookout for more from Samantha Shannon.
