Historia
Twilight of the Gods is a riveting account of the harrowing last year of World War II in the Pacific, when the US Navy won the largest naval battle in history; MacArthur made good his pledge to return to the Philippines; waves of kamikazes attacked the Allied fleets; the Japanese fought to the last man on one island after another; B-29 bombers burned down Japanese cities; and Hiroshima and Nagasaki were vaporized. Toll's narratives of combat in the air, at sea, and on the beaches are gripping, but he also takes the listener into the halls of power in Washington and Tokyo.

Historia
A white-knuckle account of the First Infantry Division’s harrowing D-Day assault on the eastern sector of Omaha Beach - acclaimed historian John C. McManus has written a gripping history that will stand as the last word on this titanic battle. Nicknamed the Big Red One, First Division had fought from North Africa to Sicily, earning a reputation as stalwart warriors on the front lines and rabble-rousers in the rear. Yet on D-Day, these jaded combat veterans melded with fresh-faced replacements to accomplish one of the most challenging and deadly missions ever.

Hated the reader
Revisado: 03-22-17
This is the first book (in all my years of listening to Audible), that I disliked the announcer so much that I stopped listening in 10 minutes. I then downloaded the print version to finish. I thought his read was bland and uninspired. This heroic story deserved a voice that was into the subject and not just a page reader. Also the tone of his voice sounded to me condescending and arrogant. If this was a college class I would have dropped it.

Historia
Under the leadership of her fearless skipper, Captain Gene Fluckey, the Barb sank the greatest tonnage of any American sub in World War II. At the same time, the Barb did far more than merely sink ships-she changed forever the way submarines stalk and kill their prey.
This is a gripping adventure chock-full of "you-are-there" moments. Fluckey has drawn on logs, reports, letters, interviews, and a recently discovered illegal diary kept by one of his torpedomen.

Makes you feel like a 10 year old
Revisado: 05-25-15
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I am a fan of submarine stories. In this case I was let down. The story is read in the first person. The dialogue is corny and unimaginative. Maybe I'd read this as a book.
What did you like best about this story?
What this captain and his crew accomplished. It's hard not to respect anyone who served in the silent service in WW2.
What three words best describe Corey Snow’s performance?
Golly Jeez Batman.
Could you see Thunder Below! being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
If this book was made into a movie it would be an insult to the fine submarine stories that were. It's no "Run Silent Run Deep."
Any additional comments?
I felt Corey Snow was totally wrong for this read. He has a corny 1950's type voice. I'd describe his voice acting as an audio Norman Rockwell painting. If you liked Mickey Rooney's performances in his early movies, then you'll like his read.

Historia
Between 1937 and 1945, approximately 55 million people perished in the series of interrelated conflicts known as the Second World War. No continent was left untouched, no ocean unaffected. The war led to the eclipse of Europe and the emergence of the United States and the Soviet Union as global superpowers; ushered in the atomic age; produced, in the Holocaust, the most horrific crime ever committed in the history of Western civilization, and led to the end of Europe's colonial empires around the world.

Couldn't finish
Revisado: 05-25-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
This is a fine book if you know nothing or a little about WW2. Professor Childers certainly did his research. A massive project to be sure. His delivery bored me. I felt that if I didn't have an appetite for anything WW2, I'd have fallen asleep. My fault for listening to an educator and not a book read by a professional announcer. I thought his take on things was listless and unexciting. I couldn't finish the lectures.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Yes. Long and an effort to get through.
