The conclusion. Just because it’s a short story doesn’t mean you can just end it once you’ve hit your word count or whatever you need to turn the story in to your publisher Lev Grossman is a great author. I’ve read several books by him but this short story just left me flat. It seemed like it was working up to something very interesting and then just.

Dated. Much prefer the more modern Winslow stories

I didn’t enjoy many of many of Winslow’s short stories and books on Audible. Buddha’s Mirror though seemed to not have the style or flair that make Winslow an author I seek out. The international scene changes and attempts to bring in British and Chinese culture and characters seemed unnatural and the protagonists instant obsession with the heroine were also forced. I got my money’s worth but then again, it was free to listen.

I almost didn’t get this because when I did the preview, it only gave me the forward which was just a little snippet. So glad I went ahead and made the purchase. This is a phenomenal book. One of the best I have listened to ever it is deeply thought-provoking, and, stirring. The performance is stellar bringing additional life to the fantastic story!

This could have been a very good book. Unfortunately, it is not. The lack of subtlety and the clumsiness of the telling made it a real choppy uneven story. The narrator was fine, but seemed kind of wooden and did not have enough variation in tone to + significant.

So we’ll written, so well performed! Ultimately uplifting though it’s a hard listen in many parts.

What a treat! I’d never read the book or seen the movie so I didn’t know what to expect. Loved the post ww2 swagger of nyc as described by a southerner. Narration was brilliant. Just the right amount of contrast. Added immensely to the story!

Ed Harris does a masterful job of telling this crisp story. Noir in the blinding light of the desert.

This seems like a true classic of the genre which, although I have not read a lot like it it seems to run through with it air of psychological cliffhangers and tortured self examination of guilty consciences

I suffered through this entire day+ (28 hours) of this story so that I could fully evaluate this book. I keep listening in hopes that it would redeem itself with characters that were empathic, relatable or at least witty. Right through to the simpering end and each of the three books within a book (don't call them mini-books at 8+ hours each) just ground on and on. Yanagihara seems obsessed with gay men and yet can't seem to write a story in which a gay man shows strength of character, judgement or concern for anyone but himself. I hope I've saved you a day in your life. Pass.

I listened to a Gentleman in Moscow a couple of years ago and on a whim decided to listen again. What a delight!
The story and narration are spot on in every way. History, mystery, intrigue and a myriad of wry observations on life and living as a gentleman in soviet Moscow.
