Jeremy Crawford, husband of best-selling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish. Is this a trend? A woman moves in with a family, and the whole story becomes predictable.

Historia
We are familiar with maps that outline all 50 states. And we are also familiar with the idea that the United States is an "empire", exercising power around the world. But what about the actual territories - the islands, atolls, and archipelagos - this country has governed and inhabited? In How to Hide an Empire, author Daniel Immerwahr tells the fascinating story of the United States outside the United States. In crackling, fast-paced prose, he reveals forgotten episodes that cast American history in a new light.

This is a brilliant book. The only flaw (my perception, anyway) is that I have not heard Black folks talk that way, even in the South.

This oral history takes the listener behind the curtain for all the show's highlights, from its origins as Comedy Central's underdog late-night program hosted by Craig Kilborn to Jon Stewart's long reign to Trevor Noah's succession, rising from a scrappy jester in the 24-hour political news cycle to become part of the beating heart of politics - a trusted source for not only comedy but also commentary, with a reputation for calling bullshit and an ability to effect real change in the world.

Historia
A compassionate, humorous story of faith, betrayal, and coming of age on the sawdust trail. She was just three years old when her mother signed on as the organist of tent revivalist David Terrell, and before long, Donna Johnson was part of the hugely popular evangelical preacher’s inner circle. At seventeen, she left the ministry for good, with a trove of stranger-than-fiction memories.

I Am of a Certain Age
Revisado: 09-01-23
I love to recommend books but I can't figure out who else would appreciate this. The phenomena covered may be gone forever, I can't say. I would love to share it with my adult kids but with what historical frame of reference? I became quite aware of, not Terrell, but similar tent revivalists of the era.
African Americans may have mixed feelings. I applaud Terell and Co. for standing up to the KKK, but there's no mention of how the public swimming pool would not have allowed Black kids. The author seems to lionize antiracist aspects, but this was a period when there was such extreme violence against Blacks for the most innocuous of reasons that to reduce them can make the reader overlook the insidiousness of today's white supremacy.
We must bear in mind that Pentecostals/ Assemblies of God/Evangelicals are the conservators of race-hate today, and while the author seems to have evolved, there remains a vestige of the normalization of MAGA. It remains unchallenged, and therefore, it is left benign.
Still, it was an entertaining read, almost like a novel.

The narration makes it harder to process than it needs to be. I am still glad I listened. This is on the level of "important reading" and "everyone should read this book."

Leaving the Saints is an unforgettable memoir about one woman's spiritual quest and journey toward faith. As "Mormon royalty" within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Martha Beck was raised in a home frequented by the Church's high elders, known as the apostles, and her existence was framed by their strict code of conduct.

I am recommending this book to my friends who come from fundamentalist Christian families. Their psychic torment, in some cases, is saddening.
I just discovered Martha Beck a month ago, and this is the 3rd book of hers that I've listened to. I feel like we are part of each other.

Historia
Women including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Margaret Sanger, and Sheryl Sandberg are commonly celebrated as leaders of feminism. Yet they have fought for the few, not the many. As award-winning scholar Kyla Schuller argues, their White feminist politics dispossess the most marginalized to liberate themselves. In The Trouble with White Women, Schuller brings to life the 200-year counter-history of Black, Indigenous, Latina, poor, queer, and trans women pushing back against White feminists and uniting to dismantle systemic injustice.

Everything
Revisado: 08-22-22
"The Trouble with White Women" feels like the creation of either an attorney or a painter, I can't decide. It's literary art. It's the rare book I could not just browse or be satisfied with portions. I don't typically read snatches from books, but often in retrospect, I can recognize the most salient sections, sort of like highlighting.
This is a "cover-to-cover" affair. Every paragraph builds a chapter that leads to the next, and then finally, the epilogue.

Revisado: 03-05-22
I never thought it possible that Will Smith could surpass his musical and theatrical exploits as an author. There is so much wisdom here that it's mind-bending. I had always seen Will as something of a jester, even with his catalog of serious drama. In "Will," I found a polymath and a sage.

I'd start sometime between dinner and bedtime and couldn't stop until done. It is Louise Penny at her very best, plus the knowledge and experience of a Secretary of State in Hillary Clinton. The narration even sounds a bit like Clinton.
