Going in I thought this was going to be a bout a video game. Turns out it was so much more. After Seveneves I should have know the lengths Stephenson would go to create a great story. Every character had a sense of depth and purpose, no one was used for filler. Definitely recommend AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY

I really hope there is more to come. I found John Scalzi by accident when I first joined audible and have continued to love his work at every turn. While this is a short piece of work it is extremely entertaining in its own right. Feels like a tribute by Scalzi to Terry Pratchett.

Fantastic, Ernest Cline does it again. The writing, once again, excelled with the assistance of Wil Wheaton reading from the helm. Everything I loved about growing up with movies like The Last Star Fighter and playing games like Elite: Dangerous in one solid story. If you like those or liked Ready Player One , this is the book for you.

I will say unlike RP1 this book was more of a railroad. You can see what's coming ahead and you're just along for the ride. But don't let that discourage you, the ride is still entertaining. Additionally this book, compared to RP1, feels every bit as short as it's 11 hours where Ready Player One felt like 26 hours to its 15.

I originally was struck with the intensity of the setting and details for the book. I first encountered it as a short TV spot for the BBC adaptation. Instantly I needed to know more and looked into the story and found the book without watching the trailer or anymore of the show than those brief glimpsed images. I was disappointed in a few ways which I'll point out though I will advise that the book may still be worth finishing for others.

When starting the book I had to listen to the first 3 hours twice. The presentation and delivery of those first chapters were so dry as to be reading a history book. No doubt after the second listen, that was the intention. At every turn I felt like I missed something or did not understand a joke, hint, reference, or name. Much of this I attribute to that feeling of reading the forward for a high school US History textbook.

Before I started the book over after the first 3 hours I turned back to the Wikipedia entry and read the reception and synopsis again to better understand what I might be missing. Most of my issues with the book I attribute to what must be my lack of understanding of British humor and culture. At this point it still feels that that must be the reason.

Now that I have finished the book and seen how all the pieces coalesce I feel slightly better about the story as a whole. My major concerns for it come from how disjointed it felt not knowing really what Mr. Norrell was seeking and not understanding what The Gentleman was doing.

In ways those are still mysteries, but with the end of the tale and the revival of English Magic things make a little more sense. Only one question really remains for me and that is, "What happened to Mr. Lascelles?"

If you could sum up Island in the Sea of Time in three words, what would they be?

A Fantastic Voyage

What other book might you compare Island in the Sea of Time to and why?

Dies the Fire is a good parallel as that was likely the intent. Both stories follow the initial journey of the core group as they search for civilization in a world alien to them.

Which character – as performed by Todd McLaren – was your favorite?

Jared Cofflin the Sheriff and eventually Chief of Nantucket. McLaren has a clear command of cadence and diction when speaking as this northern good old boy.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I cannot think a moment I was moved but the precise detail of the fight with the Olmecs was exhilarating and added depth to the gaps in time between segments.

Any additional comments?

I am very excited to start the next book in the series
