I enjoy Max Brooks’ style of writing-novels that read like journals interspersed with recorded interviews. This one even included a couple of blurbs from NPR.
The bulk of the story consists of the contents of a journal kept by one of the characters. She goes into vivid detail about the day to day survival of a group of people stranded by the eruption of Mt. Rainier in Washington State. I felt like I was right there with them.

If you are offended by gore and excessive swearing, particularly the use of the “F” word, this book definitely is not for you. There is an abundance of both. If this doesn’t bother you and you like stories with plenty of violence and military action, then get this book and enjoy.
I am generally not bothered by descriptions of violent bloody death or gratuitous swearing. My guess is that this would be typical for battle hardened men, and women, in situations like those depicted in this book. The action is nonstop. I was a bit disturbed by the deaths of some of the characters but it is fiction, so there is that. The bad guys are so unequivocally nasty that I rooted for the soldiers to prevail.
