Historia
Gangs ruled Cantilucca. Guns were the only law, and there was no lack of guns. It was hard to imagine matters getting worse. Until the survey team arrived.... Major Matthew Coke was not a squeamish man, but the state of affairs on Cantilucca turned his stomach. He was only human after all. Where some of the rest of his team were concerned, it was difficult to be sure: five professional mercenaries who'd learned the hard way that in the end they could defeat anything - except their own consciences.

slammer
Revisado: 09-01-23
listened to this one fairly quickly. what seems like an off the beaten path opening, moving quickly from back story to backstory, turns into a magnificent 7 style story of bad asses with hearts of gold. very fun and compelling addition to the slammers repertoire.

Great Performance Doesnt save this one
Revisado: 09-13-21
as always, Johnathan Keeble does an amazing performance capturing the madness and groteque spirit of Demons and beings speaking through a layer of puss, mucus, and insanity.
However, neither the central story line or the Knights Errant story line in this book are very compelling. Theres plenty of foreshadowing and narrative hooks, but they fall pretty flat when the reveals come about. Especially in the Death Guard Storyline, the central character is neither relateable nor do his actions seem justified, he just kind of lets terrible things happen all around him, even though its seems pretty clear to everyone he is being manipulated.
It all gets worse that theres just a lot of grind to get to the reveals and not much build in tension to get there. by the time everything come to a head, I was so bored I was happy to have the end in sight and completely unsuprised or entertained by any of the conclusions.
The saving grace of the book is the fun body horror, colorful descriptions of mutation and rot. Fun to be sure, but cant cary the book when the descriptions fail to shock you 2/3rds of the way into the book.
Certainly not the worst Horus Heresy book but honestly would suggest skipping it.

Historia
Unaware of the wider Heresy and following the Warmaster's increasingly cryptic orders, Roboute Guilliman returns to Ultramar to muster his Legion for war against the orks massing in the Veridian system. Without warning, their supposed allies in the Word Bearers Legion launch a devastating invasion of Calth, scattering the Ultramarines fleet and slaughtering all who stand in their way. This confirms the worst scenario Guilliman can imagine - Lorgar means to settle their bitter rivalry once and for all.

My favorite HH book so far
Revisado: 04-08-21
This book is written in a back and forth narration style, going between a clinical military journal recounting the time line of an epic betrayal and more typical narrative persepectives. great mix of bolter action, void combat and demonic horror. Abnett is the hands down the best writer in this game. Other reviews mention that he's overly verbose in this book, but the colorful descriptions and details are excellent.
Gareth Armstrong narrates again and gives a vastly better performance than First Heretic. Still some of his voices are cloying and occasionally break the scene.

unimaginative and a slog
Revisado: 04-02-21
The book's take on religion and faith are pretty unimaginative. The concepts are all Christian-centric without adding much beyond basic ideas like sin and prayer. The characters are not interesting falling into two categories: power hungry priests and slightly more virtuous faithful, tragic heroes who get dragged along doing nothing. Lorgar is written to only speak in cliches and ends up being more annoying than Fulgrim, which is incredible. Nothing about this character is beleivable leaving one to assume he has just always been delusional. this ends up detracting from what should be a tragic fall, but it reads more just like a constant trainwreck.
The voice performance makes this all even more painful. Variation between female and some male voices is slight at best, and most are quite grating.
Cannot reccomend this book.
