The old version sounds melodramatic in comparison. This was totally worth the purchase for a new experience of this amazing book

Is because they can’t handle a hook that challenges their conceptions. While this is a great take on the hunger games concept, it’s also a brutal takedown of the current American justice system and its oppression of POC. It’s a great listen, but also a challenging one.

Whiny and privileged
Revisado: 10-18-23
I really wanted to like this but I was so annoyed!
First- the narration was slurred which is worrying.
Second- he never seems to take full responsibility for his actions. He blames everyone but himself. I admire the struggle he’s gone through and survived, but any gratitude he expresses here seems like lip service. Humongous ego.

Bad writing ruins a good premise
Revisado: 07-28-23
The dialogue is inauthentic and the prose is so ridiculously overwritten that it pulls you out of the story. It’s a shame because the premise is solid

Historia
From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

Flawed writing let’s it down
Revisado: 07-15-23
The story is incredibly engaging and I was very much into it most of the time, but there are a few basic flaws with the writing that took me out of it at places. Stupid things but they stick out. Attempts at creating camaraderie between characters we barely know, character names that feel like they’ve been pulled out of a hat, and a particularly cringe inducing run that attempts a friendly conversation between two women and it’s clear this author just tried way too hard and failed miserably.
That being said, the innovative story is compelling enough for me to jump into the second book.

The narrator change was the right call
Revisado: 08-24-21
It takes a bit of getting used to after two books with the other narrator, so yes, the first hour or so is jarring. But I could not imagine this story being told by the original narrator. It just wouldn’t have fit.
Long story short- stick to it, you’ll get it, and it’s pretty great.

Apologetic Fan Service, but still fun
Revisado: 01-01-21
It seems to me Cline had a list of grievances people had with the original book and methodically checked them off as he was writing the sequel. Previously unmentioned 80s pop culture? Check! No longer minimizing female characters? Check! Addressing the low stakes of virtual battle? Check!
The construction was apparent and distracting at times.
That being said- I was still engaged and found it a fun ride. If you can suspend your cynicism for a few hours, you’ll probably enjoy it too.
