Historia
With dizzying social transformations in everything from gender to social justice, it may seem like there's never been a more tumultuous period in history. But a single year in the late 18th century saw a number of influential transformations—or even revolutions—that changed the social trajectory of the Western world. By understanding how those events influenced today's cultural landscape, Christians can more effectively bear witness to God's truth in a post-Christian age.

One of the best books ever written
Revisado: 09-09-24
Andrew Wilson’s style and intellectual breadth makes this book one of the most entertaining and informative books I have ever read. I finished it on Audible but now I have to get the hardback copy.

Felt like a rough start - deceptively though
Revisado: 07-09-24
The start of this trilogy was deceptively shallow. Keep with it. At the end, you’ll be grateful that you did. My only judgment is that it feels like the book starts in both chapter one and chapter eight. But it kept me plugged in enough that I already bought book two! Clever is the word I’m looking for. I promise you it is worth sticking with it.

Historia
This mind-bending tour of metaphysics applies philosophy to the forefront of today's knowledge. Over the course of 24 fascinating lectures, Professor Johnson thinks through the big questions about humans and the universe: The relationship between the mind and the brain, how consciousness emerges from neurochemical processes, the existence of God, human free will, the possibility of time travel, and whether we live in a multiverse or even a computer simulation.

Pretty Good
Revisado: 06-29-19
I have enjoyed this course (as I have always enjoyed Johnson’s papers outside of it), but I do feel like the arguments for the existence of the future before we arrive there were weak. But as a survey of views, everything else was well balanced. I would highly recommend it to the philosophically interested individual without formal philosophical training.

Historia
The publication of a new translation by Fagles is a literary event. His translations of both the Iliad and Odyssey have sold hundreds of thousands of copies and have become the standard translations of our era. Now, with this stunning modern verse translation, Fagles has reintroduced Virgil's Aeneid to a whole new generation, and completed the classical triptych at the heart of Western civilization.

An Excellent Performance!
Revisado: 03-19-19
I have read other reviews regarding this performance of The Aeneid, but I disagree with those who did not find this narration wonderful. It is quite possibly the best I have heard in the last year or two now, not that others have not been good.
Additionally, this is the first book in my Graduate studies that has wowed me. I don’t know if I should give credit to Virgil, the translator, Callow, or all three, but I have found a gem in this book. I hope others will come away with the same impression.

Aristotle's Poetics

Historia
Aristotle's Poetics is best known for its definitions and analyses of tragedy and comedy, but it also applies to truth and beauty as they are manifested in the other arts. In our age, when the natural and social sciences have dominated the quest for truth, it is helpful to consider why Aristotle claimed poetry is more philosophical and more significant than history. Like so many other works by Aristotle, the Poetics has dominated the way we have thought about all forms of dramatic performance in Europe and America ever since.

Skips a few sections
Revisado: 03-16-19
While I understand why a few of the sections are skipped, it made it difficult to notate in my paperback edition where I needed to place notes. Skipped sections have little to do with tragedy or go off on a tangent on the Greek language, particularly in Book 25. Good narrator voice and pace. Just be aware of these few,m and short skipped sections.

Historia
From colonial times into the 20th century, our laws and court cases ignored atheism, assuming that all good Americans were religious. Only in the 20th century, with the passage of laws allowing for conscientious objection to war, did nonbelief enter debates about religious liberty. Still, today every one of the 20 states has God written into its constitution. God is everywhere in American public life. R. Laurence Moore and Isaac Kramnick explore both God's omnipresence and the dramatic rise in nonbelievers that has led to an "atheist awakening" intent on holding the country to its secular principles.

Dry At Times, But Quite Insightful - A Well Formed Case
Revisado: 03-04-19
This book is very thorough and fair in its treatment of theists and non-theists views. I applaud the effort and will likely reference this book in papers. However, being very detailed has the downside of being dry. The authors combat this the best they can by dramatizing the stories (without any intentional fictionalizing) and carefully organizing the work.

Historia
In Consilience (a word that originally meant "jumping together"), Edward O. Wilson renews the Enlightenment's search for a unified theory of knowledge in disciplines that range from physics to biology, the social sciences and the humanities. Using the natural sciences as his model, Wilson forges dramatic links between fields. Presenting the latest findings in prose of wonderful clarity and oratorical eloquence, and synthesizing it into a dazzling whole, Consilience is science in the path-clearing traditions of Newton, Einstein, and Richard Feynman.

Why do Internet, financial service, and beer commercials dominate Super Bowl advertising? How do political ceremonies establish authority? Why does repetition characterize anthems and ritual speech? Why were circular forms favored for public festivals during the French Revolution? This book answers these questions using a single concept: common knowledge.

Too Fast

The performance is too fast and sounds unnatural at 75% speed. The start of the book is a little dry too, but gets better as you stick with it.
