War and Peace is at once an epic war chronicle and an exploration of everything that make us all human: love and hate, ambition and despair, life and death. Allow yourself to get lost in the lives of three Russian aristocratic families, whose triumphs and challenges are every bit as resonant to today’s listener as they were to original readers. Thandiwe Newton inhabits each character with such flair that it is easy to forget that you are listening to one voice.

War and Peace and Philosophy
Revisado: 02-26-25
I was intimidated by this book. Some people said it wasn’t a novel, but didn’t really explain what it was. Everyone felt the need to mention the 500 characters in the book.
This was a surprisingly modern feeling book. It is definitely a novel because it has characters in a plot that moves along to a conclusion.
There are only about twenty characters that you really have to keep track of, and Tolstoy helpfully doesn’t let you forget who they are connected to. If you can keep up with the characters in a Dickens novel you will have no problem here.
Interspersed with the plot are chapters in which Tolstoy explores philosophical ideas like free will and inevitability.
I enjoyed this book, and I know it’s the kind of book that will get better with each reread.

Historia
Lucy Entwhistle's beloved father has just died; aged twenty-two she finds herself alone in the world. Leaning against her garden gate, dazed and unhappy, she is disturbed by the sudden appearance of the perspiring Mr Wemyss. This middle-aged man is also in mourning - for his wife Vera, who has died in mysterious circumstances. Before Lucy can collect herself, Mr Wemyss has taken charge: of the funeral arrangements, of her kind aunt Dot, but most of all of Lucy herself - body and soul.

Great writing, narrator is inferior
Revisado: 02-15-25
I love this book. It is a complex psychological study of an unequal marriage.
The narrator voices the protagonist to sound like a young child and, while she is written to be naive, it is jarring and gross to hear her discussing mature marriage issues in a child’s voice.

Historia
In 1851, Father Jean Marie Latour comes to serve as the Apostolic Vicar to New Mexico. What he finds is a vast territory of red hills and tortuous arroyos, American by law but Mexican and Indian in custom and belief. In the almost forty years that follow, Latour spreads his faith in the only way he knows—gently, all the while contending with an unforgiving landscape, derelict and sometimes openly rebellious priests, and his own loneliness. Out of these events, Cather gives us an indelible vision of life unfolding in a place where time itself seems suspended.

Beautiful writing, not much plot
Revisado: 04-18-24
This book is filled with beautifully written descriptions of the American Southwest. It explores themes of life, death, friendship, and religion. It is deep and thought provoking. However, it is more of a collection of scenes or episodes than “story.”

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

A well written, thorough, and fair biography of a very great man. The book’s central theme is General Grant’s inspiring dedication to unity and equality. As a bonus, Grant had many fascinating friends and peers: Lincoln, Sherman, Lee, Custer, and Twain.

Historia
We live in a world obsessed with drinking. We drink at baby showers and work events, brunch and book club, graduations and funerals. Yet no one ever questions alcohol’s ubiquity—in fact, the only thing ever questioned is why someone doesn’t drink. It is a qualifier for belonging and if you don’t imbibe, you are considered an anomaly. As a society, we are obsessed with health and wellness, yet we uphold alcohol as some kind of magic elixir, though it is anything but.

Too bad.
Revisado: 03-06-20
If AA is only for men, her program is only for women.
Seems obvious from the title, but oh my goodness the venom. She paints men with the same sexist brush that SOME of them use on us women.
We need more awareness about how alcohol is not helpful. We need more stories about how living sober doesn't have to be a daily suck-fest. Sober life can be fantastic. We need different treatment options for different people.
She speaks beautifully about all these things with plenty of practical things you can do now.
I just wish she could have cared enough about the half of humanity who are male to be kind to them, too.

Read Allen Carr's book instead.
Revisado: 02-02-20
This book is so similar to Allen Carr's book The Easy Way To Control Alcohol, that I don't understand how the author hasn't been sued.
It is a good book and a good method, its just that Allen Carr did it first and deserves the credit.

This book is like listening to the early episodes of their podcast. It is funny, entertaining and moving. Georgia, particularly, shares a lot of her deeply personal history.
It is also a love song to therapy and Brene Brown, in a good way.
It is one of the best self help books I have ever read (probably because it isn't a self help book) and I want to buy a copy for my daughter and sister who have no interest in true crime. I think they would love it anyway.
