Faith is not religion - Try it!

An amazing and very human woman who isn’t afraid to speak truth to power; her journey and what she has learned along the way. Really a wonderful, thought provoking read that doesn’t preach or try to convert you to her beliefs but speaks of universal (and sometimes conflicting) truths.

Historia
Al Ward lives on an isolated mining claim in the high desert of central Nevada fifty miles from the nearest town. A grizzled man in his sixties, he survives on canned soup, instant coffee, and memories of his ex-wife, friends and family he’s lost, and his life as a touring musician. Hampered by insomnia, bouts of anxiety, and a chronic lethargy that keeps him from moving back to town, Al finds himself teetering on the edge of madness and running out of reasons to go on—until a horse arrives on his doorstep: nameless, blind, and utterly helpless.

Depressing
Revisado: 02-20-25
Well narrated but a depressing story about a man who had talent but wanted his life in a bottle.
Life is depressing enough without having to read about it.

Raw and important
Revisado: 07-09-24
Excellent narration of a time before equal rights for the homosexual community. Three overlapping stories in one that illustrate the phobias and injustices that tragically still exist in too many minds, if no longer by law.
I grew up in NYC during the 60s and early 70s, when some friends’ fathers struggled to uphold appearances while their families, livelihoods, and even their lives were threatened, when my own family members had to hide the truth of their hearts.
While Western society has come a long way toward acceptance and equality, I deeply fear we may be heading backwards, with the so - called ’Christian’ right wing spewing hate and bigotry against our right to choose whom we love and how we control our bodies.

Historia
Harry Truman and Pablo Picasso were contemporaries and were both shaped by and shapers of the great events of the twentieth century—the man who painted Guernica and the man who authorized the use of atomic bombs against civilians. But in most ways, they couldn’t have been more different. Picasso was a communist, and probably the only thing Truman hated more than communists was modern art. Picasso was an indifferent father, a womanizer, and a millionaire. Truman was utterly devoted to his family. How did they come to be shaking hands in front of Picasso’s studio in the south of France?

Interesting background to an unlikely meetup.
Revisado: 06-13-24
This book just goes to show that even minor historical events can be illustrative if framed within context.
The author does a great job of bringing seemingly insignificant players in the worlds of politics and art to the forefront, capturing the antipathy and ridiculous fear-mongering about the threat of Modern Art. The culmination of the meeting two giants of their time and worlds is almost a let down, but makes me smile in retrospect. If you are all interested in art history, it’s a worthwhile read.
Now for my usual gripe about narrators: Why oh why don’t the publishing houses coach the narrators on pronunciation, especially of other languages? One would think that a book that is about a meeting that takes place in France would be narrated by someone who would at least google the pronunciation of places and words in French! The narration is fine, otherwise, and it’s really a shame to subject the listener to such an unnecessary irritation.

Wow - Raw and Revealing. Read it, because it’s important.
Revisado: 06-06-24
I’m 70, a product of the Viet Nam years with the wisdom of hindsight. I am struck by the valor of these women (and men) who were thrust into an incomprehensible and untenable war, who lived moment by moment. Their grit is astonishing, and I’m glad they are finally getting their due as we are now able to differentiate between the brutality of war and the beauty of those who fought.
This book is raw and revealing, told in the story of one woman, her bravery and fragility and a victim of her time. It has it all, depth, emotion and lack thereof, love and betrayal, death and survival, vividly told in historical context.
Read it. And if you’re a veteran of any war, please be careful as it may trigger some of your harshest and most painful experience. That said, I honor your sacrifice and bravery.

Historia
In this honest, layered and unforgettable book that alternates between storytelling and her own poetry, Pamela Anderson breaks the mold of the celebrity memoir while taking back the tale that has been crafted about her. Her blond bombshell image was ubiquitous in the 1990s. Discovered in the stands of a football game, she was immediately rocket launched into fame, becoming Playboy’s favorite cover girl and an emblem of Hollywood glamour and sexuality. But what happens when you lose grip on your own life—and the image the notoriety machine creates for you is not who you really are?

Historia
With its quaint villages, local restaurants serving up lobster rolls, and miles and miles of warm, sandy beaches, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is famous for being America’s carefree seaside getaway. But in August 2012, the first confirmed shark attack in almost eighty years occurred in the region. As shark sightings quickly began to increase on Cape Cod and elsewhere and large beachside billboards warning about the growing shark population became a common sight, a boogie boarder died after being attacked by a great white shark in Cape Cod’s shallow waters.

Well written, well narrated look at one of the ocean’s most feared and misunderstood fish.
I’m a diver, but have zero desire to encounter one of these magnificent creatures. I had no idea so little was (and still is) known about them, and am glad to learn what I can through this book.

The incredible writing, the cadence of the words, the turns of phrases, the insights into grief and music.
Beautifully narrated by the author, it is one of the best books I have listened to, and I’m going to buy it in print as well, so I can keep it on my shelf.
