Historia
Stuart Jamieson's story is the story of four decades of advances in heart surgery. Taut, elegantly crafted, and ever-attentive to the patients for whom he was the last best chance, Close to the Sun is an adventurous, riveting account based on the experience of over 40,000 heart surgeries, where everything was on the line every moment in the O.R.

Life of a Cardiac Transplant Surgeon
Revisado: 07-20-19
I really enjoyed this book. Dr Jamieson is a true pioneer in the field and participated in the early days of cardiac transplant and open-heart surgery. He was born in Rhodesia and his growing up in Africa brings a special touch to the narrative. He went to medical school in England and eventually went to Stanford under Dr Norman Shumway . All legends in the field particularly my favorite Dr Walter Lilehy. After a bad experience in Minnesota, he moved to San Diego and never left building an outstanding surgical cardiac center. What is missing in the book is even a minimal insight into his personal life. Dr Jamieson never mentions his wife and children. Maybe with a record number of surgeries, there was no time for personal activities. There were days that he apparently did not sleep. He constantly mentions performing record number of lung and heart transplant as well as coronary bypass and pulmonary endarterectomies as if he wanted to win a contest in the Guinness book of records. I was disappointed with the frequent references to the number of operations he performed. He is a pioneer and legend in the field and the constant references to breaking records diminish his accomplishments. There is a big emptiness in his narrative when it comes to what kind of a person was he.?. Was there a family life? Did he spend all his life (24/7) on call and available for emergencies without suffering like most of us physicians from burn-out syndromes that include family disruption, divorce, and suicide.
Nevertheless, this is an excellent book giving the reader (listener ) a historical perspective of this exciting field..

Intense!!!!
Revisado: 07-11-18
This was one of the most intense action-filled trillers I have read in a long time. It is already a bestseller ( #12 last week in the NY Times). This is Catherine first book and most likely will become a movie. I was looking forward to a traffic jam so I could listen to another chapter.. I enjoy the scuba honeymoon and the discovery of "something in the water". I am surprised with so many negative reviews.
Excellent audio exceptional narration by the author. I am looking forward to her next book. Maybe be a followup with some of the same characters and a different story.

In one second your life is changed forever!!
Revisado: 11-04-15
The sudden diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma was like a grenade explosion in Tom's life . A world icon, Tom Brokaw is a respected reporter and writer that used to enjoy extreme health engaging in multiple dynamic activities such as hunting, fishing, skiing, travel in the company of movie stars visiting exotic places. Suddenly there is a implosion of his life and regaining his health becomes his only drive and goal. All his projects, books and future trips have to cancelled . The narrative is rich and sincere not holding back any feelings or selfish thoughts. The reader or listener becomes part of Tom's entourage. He endures extreme pain and severe side effects from violent chemotherapy. Anorexia and persistent nausea and vomiting is followed by weight loss and generalized weakness. The marathon runner became a distant memory. After one year and a half his marrow responds and there was no need for bone marrow transplantation. In the depth of his despair he rediscovers the essential elements of his life such as the unrelenting love and support from his wife and kids. His daughter Jennifer (a ER physician) became the coordinator of his medical care.. Frequently he digresses remembering historical interviews with Mandela, and other dignitaries or his memories of his younger days in South Dakota.
Eventually he gets into remission and he is ready to enjoy the simple pleasures of life and engage in a permanent state of living life second by second in a constant "joie de vivre"
A truly exceptional book . Mark Bramhall tone and emotion in his voice only enriched this experience .Highly Recommended !!!

Historia
Based on more than 40 interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

A portrait of an era.
Revisado: 11-28-11
Water Isaacson was able to write a unique biography of Steve Jobs and the dawn of the computer revolution. Steve always aimed for the perfect combination of art and technology. He would insist, independent of the cost , in the perfect feel and look of a new device that would transform an industry (ie ipod, iphone, ipad). Steve was able to start again in different technology areas ( ie Pixar) and by applying his M.O. of excellence and innovation resulted in success over and over.
Like any creative genius his relationships with his staff and Apple's Board was complicated and the author never tries to portrait him as a nice compassionate person . He was always striving for perfection. To follow this road one sometimes have to be ruthless.
Steve Jobs stands alone as the true revolutionary genius that during the scope of his short life changed the world not once but multiple times.
I also enjoyed the narrative of Dylan Baker. I am looking forward to listen to his work in the
future.
