Historia
Why is it that so many efforts by liberals to lift the Black underclass not only fail, but often harm the intended beneficiaries? In Please Stop Helping Us, Jason L. Riley examines how well-intentioned welfare programs are in fact holding Black Americans back. Minimum-wage laws may lift earnings for people who are already employed, but they price a disproportionate number of Blacks out of the labor force. Affirmative action in higher education is intended to address past discrimination, but the result is fewer Black college graduates than would otherwise exist.

The author provides a wealth of data to support his conclusions. Not just a bunch of rhetoric.

Historia
Ataegina was an isolated world of medieval castles, varied cultures, and conquests, vibrant until the demons rose and spread relentless destruction. Swarms of lethal creatures with black husks, murderous claws, barbed tails, and dreaded “tooth-tongues” raged through the lowlands, killing 90 percent of the planet’s population. Terrified survivors fled to hidden mountain keeps where they eke out a meager existence. When a trio of young warriors discovers a new weapon, they see a chance to end this curse. To save humanity, they must fight.

Worth a listen!
Revisado: 08-18-21
A really good addition to the Aliens universe featuring strong characters, and quite a few scares. Woven throughout are themes of bravery, self sacrifice, and good and bad leadership. I still can't believe Bronson Pinchot's voice. He's an amazing narrator. Perhaps a tad too much foul language, and "you black bastards!" is a line that should have never made it past the editor. Overall, I quite enjoyed this book.

Historia
A toxic presidential election is underway in an America already badly weakened by internal divisions. While politicians focus entirely on maintaining their own power, ISIS kidnaps a brilliant French microbiologist and forces him to begin manufacturing anthrax. Slickly produced videos chronicling his progress and threatening an imminent attack are posted to the internet, intensifying the hysteria gripping the United States.

Don't believe the haters!
Revisado: 02-19-21
I found this book to be true Vince Flynn's legacy. It's an exciting and timely story (listening in the midst of the real-life pandemic). Some reviewers were not happy with hearing the terrorist's inner dialogue and point of view. Vince Flynn did that as well. We see through the major characters' points of view and hear their thoughts and motivations, that's not new here, It gives the characters depth and enriches the story. It was fun, scary, and action packed as always. And George Guidall continues to deliver top-notch performances. One of my favorites.

Historia
Dan Delgado is a private investigator. When it comes to finding cheating spouses, corporate thieves, or runaway teenagers, he’s unenthusiastic, and unmatched. As a former San Francisco detective, he misses more meaningful work, but he hasn’t had the heart for it since his wife’s death five years prior. That is, until a phone call from a distraught mother, an illegal immigrant who can’t go to the police, puts him on the hunt for a missing little girl. By the time he reaches the mother’s small home, she’s missing, too. The circumstances are strange....

Definitely kept me interested the whole book. Interesting concept that would make a good movie, and just enough humor-- Winnie is a hoot! Without giving anything away, when "The Others" show up, the author jumps the shark a bit, but all in all, I enjoyed the whole adventure.

The quadrant is on the brink of all-out civil war, but almost nobody knows it. Now that he knows a malevolent AI that calls itself the Machine has seized much of the ConFed's military apparatus and even controls the Grand Adjudicators themselves, Jason Burke must decide if he risks picking a fight with such an overmatched enemy, or if he runs to hide and fight another day. Omega Force needs allies, and needs them quickly.

I may be done with this series
Revisado: 04-10-20
The author seems to be going in the direction of his Black Fleet style. I love Omega Force for fun, the antics of the crew, the action, and humor. Much of that is being whittled away in favor of a convoluted political story with so many players I can't keep track. I listen on my commute and don't have the bandwidth to remember the protectorates, empires, cooperatives, fleets, etc. I just want to tune in for a fun story like these used to be. I listened to the first Black Fleet and it was boring and forgettable to me, and this book was about the same. Thankful that my needs are being met by the Expeditionary Force series by Alanson, which is always a fun ride.

Historia
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Alexander Grant is a little too good at a few too many things. Two dozen martial arts. Twice that many languages. Chess, the piano, sports, forging excused absences, you name it. He graduated high school top of his class 17 times. Of course, no one knows any of this. Not that he wants to go unnoticed. It’s just safer that way.

Interesting, different, but not great
Revisado: 07-16-19
First, this is not a time travel book, which I read some people say. The main character is simply very old, aging very slowly. As such, he has many memories of ancient times that he recalls. Not a fan of history, I found those parts boring, and also a bit over the top. (In a Forest Gump sort of trope, this "kid" has been everywhere and known practically every major historical figure, in a way that made me roll my eyes every time he casually mentioned those acquaintances.) Still, it was interesting enough to hold me over while I wait for the next installments of my favorite series (Expeditionary Force and Omega Force, which are more fun sci-fi, and the pre-Ender's Game books, which are just really good sci-fi). There were many good action sequences with good tactical cleverness, and a small smattering of humor. Worth a listen. I will likely continue with the series.

After the latest mission of the starship Flying Dutchman, Earth is safe not just for a year, but for hundreds of years. The ship’s weary crew wonders what they will do with their lives in peacetime, but the enemy has other plans, and there is danger on the Homefront. Starring Zachary Quinto, R.C. Bray, Kate Mulgrew, Robert Picardo, and everyone's favorite AI, Skippy the Magnificent, alongside a full cast. Includes plenty of pew-pew-pew, original sound composition, and maybe some singing by R.C. Bray.

Entertaining, but annoying sound editing
Revisado: 07-02-19
Props to Zachary Quinto and RC Bray for doing a great job keeping me from turning it off. Fun and funny at times, but mostly annoying and confusing. Hard to follow. Overacted by most of the cast. Still, it was entertaining and kept me satisfied while waiting for the next Ex-Force book. Loved, loved, loved Zachary's voice, which I never noticed was so sultry before now, and nice to hear Skippy and Bishop have actual conversations.

Epic final year
Revisado: 10-29-18
I loved it. Drew Hayes seemed to have become a better writer over the course of the series. At times, the speech and phrasing were almost poetic. He also juggled quite a bit, between the huge cast of characters, multiple story lines, and activity, this book had a huge chance of being convoluted. We were expecting an epic battle, and Hayes delivered.
