Historia
Colonel Butler has paid his dues and just wants to enjoy his retirement on a remote planet. But the galaxy has had other plans. He has been roped into searching for a politician’s missing son and an industry magnate’s missing daughter. He has been kidnapped, violated numerous laws, and caused the destruction of colonial facilities. He’s famous—or infamous, depending on who you ask—praised and reviled in equal measure across the galaxy for his exploits.

What the heck?
Revisado: 11-04-24
Good action scenes, but not much of a back story, and a weak ending. Disappointed.

Historia
Elisabeth Elo's debut novel introduces Pirio Kasparov, a Boston-bred tough-talking girl with an acerbic wit and a moral compass that points due north. When the fishing boat Pirio is on is rammed by a freighter, she finds herself abandoned in the North Atlantic. Somehow she survives nearly four hours in the water before being rescued by the Coast Guard. But her fisherman friend Ned, the boat's owner, is not so lucky.

Chilling, Not Chillin'

I was attracted to this book due to comparisons to Smilla's Sense of Snow, and I wasn't disappointed. Great premise, interesting characters and good action/suspense, even if I had to suspend my skeptical nature for a while.
I look forward to other works by Ms. Elo--keep it coming, thanks for the entertainment.

A Favorite Fantasy Series, Continued
Revisado: 06-18-13
It took me while to get to this novel, part of a favorite series, since I "had" to listen to the first three stories set in this world (The Silent Tower, Silicon Mage and Dogwizard, all newly released in audio). I tossed my usual strict monthly-credit discipline to the winds and--gasp--purchased one book as a fill-in because I just couldn't wait for the days to tick past till my next credit was due.
Anne Flosnik is a warm, accessible and varied narrator, bringing life and velocity to what is a story of family, expectations, love, the vulnerability of children and obsessives. And magic.
It's a fun story with lots of twists and turns in the middle, focused on unlikely pairings and the joys of love whether pursued or stumbled upon.
Listening to the descriptions of this worlds' mages using crystals to focus and communicate with their fellows, I said: "Of course, it's magical Skype!"

Historia
Bruges, 1460. Street smart, brilliant at figures, adept at the subtleties of diplomacy and the well-timed untruth, Nicholas van der Poele rises from wastrel to prodigy in a breathless adventure that wins him the love of the strongest woman in Bruges and the hatred of two powerful enemies. Niccolo Rising combines history, adventure and high romance in the tradition stretching from Alexandre Dumas to Mary Renault.

A Classic Favorite Returns
Revisado: 05-05-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The answer is yes! Dunnett's first volume of her 15th century series is sublime, even if my heart belongs to Lymond. This digital production updates my venerable '90s audiocassette version, and I hope it will be followed with the other 7 volumes so I may add them to my collection.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Niccolo Rising?
On this "listen" I enjoyed the comic moments, too many to count.
What about Gordon Griffin’s performance did you like?
His reading brings an energetic pace that helps move the complex story forward. His variety of voices and accents, along with the challenges of pronunciation, kept me riveted.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Claes and Felix.

Historia
In her first novel since 2002, Nebula and Hugo award-winning author Connie Willis returns with a stunning, enormously entertaining novel of time travel, war, and the deeds - great and small - of ordinary people who shape history. In the hands of this acclaimed storyteller, the past and future collideand the result is at once intriguing, elusive, and frightening.

Just Riveting
Revisado: 03-04-10
I'm well into the listen and am entranced. I know it's a two-parter and that it contains many of the themes and characters of Willis' previous novels--and that's fine for me. The breadth of characters and points of view are complex, but manageable in the listen with the different accents of the narrator. Looking forward to savoring the remainder. It keeps me going at the gym. . .
