Bland and blunt

The story, writing, and narrating are simple and straightforward, blunt almost. It's entertaining enough, but the characters have no depth and the world seems unreal because the story is told so blandly. Probably not going to get the next in the series, but I don't regret listening to this one.

It's a "monster" harem story

Somehow skipped in all the descriptions, etc, is that this is a raunchy harem story. The writing is pretty good and I liked the characters fine. Just not the kind of story I was going for right now. It's very clearly told from a man's perspective...

I had a very hard time relating to or liking the MC. He's thrown into this new world and straight into battle and his response is relief and glee at finally being free of the constraints of society. The ones that made him, idk, not murder everyone around him? Awful first impression and I can't get past it.. Maybe I'll come back and give it another try later but right now I'm just really bothered by that attitude and not interested in reading further.

Main character is an idiot.

Maybe it gets better later, but I had to stop a few hours in because this main character woman is a complete idiot. She ends up in Victorian times and then is absolutely shocked every time people freak out when she mentions something modern. She decides to try to blend in and be what they expect, but the next moment, she forgets that completely. I don't easily give up on books but this was infuriating to listen to. Anytime she wasn't gushing over the hot laird, she was commiting time travel crimes with hardly a notice. And she's supposed to be an intelligent woman??

Also, Baltimore is not in the south. She would not have a southern accent.

I don't know if it was the authors intent, but this story perfectly (or should I say purrfectly) emulates my experience of living with adhd. Rather than being told what happened, we get to ride along in the mind of Lily, as she realizes (or doesn't) what she's forgotten or missed or gotten distracted from. It's extremely well done. I will refer to this book any time someone asks what it's like (for me) to have adhd.

Boring and bad jokes

I think this book was written to see how many convenient plot devices they could fit inside one story. That's all it is. Plus "he said... She said... He said..." on a loop. The jokes are bad and repeated far too much. How would some other random person know to make the same obscure joke that the main character does? It's just bad writing and bad story telling.

Takes half the book for the plot to start and when it finally does, it just scratches the surface of what happens. Feels like someone decided to cut out plot lines to shorten the book. It just skips what should be obvious story elements. Not great character development or world building either. Honestly disappointing.

This series was a lot of fun. Lots of drama and turns and not too much frustration. Real problems, not just created by characters. And the characters themselves are generally deeper and dynamic, not a lot of dull or flat, one-sided characters. And the naming had me constantly cracking up. Fun read.

Flat characters, unrealistic ADHD, but cute story

Revisado: 01-10-19

The story was cute, if a bit unbelievable. It's pretty common in romance novels to have a "player" settle down when they meet the right person. This story is interesting in that two such "players" settle down for each other. The unbelievable part comes in the suddenness of the resolution.

The other sad part, to me, was the lack of depth of the characters. Both had traumatic or at least difficult childhood issues, which come out during the story. You can see the way Libby's experience affected her, but get none of the thought process that leads to her decisions. The inner turmoil is completely hidden. Then, it turns out Noah has ADHD, which is part of his trouble with his father. Again, you can kind of see how that trouble shaped his life, but we don't see any of the reasons for it in his thoughts. And then, as a woman with ADHD who is also married to a man with ADHD, I don't really like the way he was portrayed. The author was clearly trying to show ADHD as an "ok" thing, and not attack it or stigmatize. But she fell back on some stereotypes and misinformation, including that medication makes you feel like a zombie/not creative. She does mention that he came to terms with needing medication for the rest of his life, but it never comes up that he's still on it or not. And, after having read the other books in the series, his inner monologue is no different than that of her other male characters. It doesn't seem like the character actually has ADHD, just that he needed a "flaw" or an "issue" to have fought with his father over, and the author tacked it on after the story was written.

Spoilers Below.

And then the resolution is so strange. They never speak about having feelings for each other, though the reader know both are coming to terms with being in love with each other but are scared of being hurt by the other's typically casual approach to dating. Then they're in vegas, and so you start assuming they will make a bet (Monica & Chandler style) and end up getting married. Then they start playing Truth or Dare, and you assume they'll "truth" out love or wanting marriage or maybe just "dare" the wedding. But no. They just kiss a couple times, then he says he'll marry her because of the curse, and she says ok. The wedding scene was great, but getting there was disappointing and confusing.

Not my favorite from Sarina Bowen

Revisado: 11-30-18

I recently chanced upon a Sarina Bowen book, and ever since I've been listening to her books back to back to back, and have loved them all. But this one wasn't the best. My favorite thing about her books is how the characters seem so real. They feel like genuine people with quirks and weaknesses, but never become caricatures of those traits. That is exactly where this book fell flat, so I was really disappointed.

The story is compelling and interesting, so it's not a bad book, but the characters felt vague and the dialogue was often stilted and confusing. It seemed like sometime the author got mixed up about which of the guys was talking, but perhaps it was just the audiobook version that suffered. The narration didn't really help with identiying which man was speaking, but was otherwise good. There were some strange moments (like when someone was shocked that a 20 year old just coming from a religious cult had never had a beer) that made things feel more forced and less real.

It felt like maybe it was an earlier book by her, though I don't think it is. The writing was just immature, especially compared to her other books. I sometimes felt like it was an abridged book, just because the story line was good, it just felt like I was missing all the detail that would bring it to life.

I'm overall glad I read it, but I'm disappointed at the lost opportunity to read more of her amazing characters. Hoping the next one is back to normal!
