More abusing than recovery
Revisado: 10-11-19
Admittedly it is hard to have much sympathy for a privileged lawyer who never lost a job or had to go without a meal or gym membership, healthy upbringing and loving supportive family to pacify her into sobriety. She lingers long on every detail of abusing drugs and alcohol and barely skims the surface of the recovery part but it is a passable peek.

Historia
Eighty-nine-year-old Isabelle McAllister has a big favor to ask her hairdresser, Dorrie. She wants the black single mother to drop everything and drive her from Texas to a funeral in Ohio - tomorrow. Dorrie, fleeing problems of her own and curious about Isabelle’s past, agrees, not knowing it will be a journey that changes both their lives. Isabelle confesses that, as a teen in 1930s Kentucky, she fell in love with Robert Prewitt, a would-be doctor and the black son of her family’s housekeeper - in a town where blacks weren’t allowed after dark. The tale of their forbidden relationship and its tragic consequences just might help Dorrie find her own way.

Cry laugh can't put down
Revisado: 09-15-19
This story is a wild tale yet very real. You get right in it. One of the few stories I do not regret one second of pure indulgence.

Historia
In turn-of-the-20th century Texas, the Berachah Home for the Redemption and Protection of Erring Girls is an unprecedented beacon of hope for young women consigned to the dangerous poverty of the streets by birth, circumstance, or personal tragedy. Built in 1903 on the dusty outskirts of Arlington, a remote dot between Dallas and Fort Worth’s red-light districts, the progressive home bucks public opinion by offering faith, training, and rehabilitation to prostitutes, addicts, unwed mothers, and “ruined” girls without forcibly separating mothers from children.

Very good story
Revisado: 09-10-19
Taking place in different time spans makes this story more interesting. A good time capsule in both eras. Good story.

Historia
In her midforties and settled into the responsibilities and routines of adulthood, Dani Shapiro found herself with more questions than answers. Was this all life was - a hodgepodge of errands, dinner dates, e-mails, meetings, to-do lists? What did it all mean? Having grown up in a deeply religious and traditional family, Shapiro had no personal sense of faith, despite repeated attempts to create a connection to something greater.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Includes a step work guide
Revisado: 07-26-18
Russell tells his personal experience strength and hope in his journey to overcome addiction. The basis of his recovery plan is through the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. He explains his interpretation of the steps in easy to understand colorful language. Included is a guide through all 12 steps with instructions. This process has kept him alcohol and substance free for 14 years so far.
I attend AA and have had a spiritual awakening as a result of working these steps and following the big book with a sponsor for a year now. It works if you want it to. I love the way he keeps it simple and true to the program. His stories are entertaining, funny, tragic and inspiring. This is an overall enjoyable experience much more than a book. I love this. I will incorporate his input when working with others. The love he freely gives is amazing.

Historia
With its deeply personal and seamless blend of memoir, cultural history, literary criticism, and reportage, The Recovering turns our understanding of the traditional addiction narrative on its head, demonstrating that the story of recovery can be every bit as electrifying as the train wreck itself. Leslie Jamison deftly excavates the stories we tell about addiction - both her own and others' - and examines what we want these stories to do and what happens when they fail us. All the while, she offers a fascinating look at the larger history of the recovery movement and at the complicated bearing that race and class have on our understanding of who is criminal and who is ill.

More than a memoir
Revisado: 06-25-18
In this book is a spectacular well told story. It is also a well told spectacular memoir. When we overcome something so large it could have killed us putting out the story and the solution can save a life. Excellent skill as well.

Fake Intelectual
Revisado: 05-05-18
The premise of keeping the status quo in place just because it exists is ludicrous and bad advice. He ignores a vital piece of the picture of institutional racism and sexism while he argues that white males are to be continually rewarded for seeking sex and status. He also confuses fascism and vulture capitalism in his arguments diluting his otherwise valid points.
