What am I missing with this one?
Revisado: 01-02-22
I hate to start off the new year on a bad note but I don’t get what every one loved about this book.
It started out good but when a book turns into a chore just to get it finished, I can’t help wondering
“What am I missing”? Nina and Kit were the only likable characters, there ended up being so many characters that left me realizing this is all for filler for the most boring party of the year.
I was looking forward to this book since it took place in 1983, the year I graduated so I thought it would be fun, not so much. I feel like the author just kept throwing things and people into the mix that didn’t need to be there like all the horrific behavior at the party. We got the picture.
I’m glad so many people loved it and I hope everyone has a great New Year with your reading and life in 2022!

Loved, loved, loved it!
Revisado: 01-02-22
I can’t believe that this has been sitting in my audible library for almost a year and a half! I’m trying to clean up my older books on my to be read pile. This was a huge surprise and definitely is going to be one of my all time favorites. I can’t believe this is a debut novel or that I let it sit for so long.
This story is about three woman who couldn’t be any more different with who they are and there place in life. Yet, a wonderful sisterhood is formed and I ate up every second of it. The narration was great, you truly felt like each one was telling you their story. The story was so well written that you felt like you were there, right in the middle of it with these three amazing woman. I honestly am going to miss listening to this book. This is a must read or if you can, a must listen!

I liked this book, loved the narrator. He is what made this story for me. You totally believed him and this was exactly how he thought. I think if I would have listened to this book 4.5 years earlier, I would have liked it more. I feel that I have been saturated with a narcissistic personality in my life for the past 4 years that none of his thinking shocked me. Just my opinion....

Welcome to Maple Street, a picture-perfect slice of suburban Long Island, its residents bound by their children, their work, and their illusion of safety in a rapidly changing world. But menace skulks among this exclusive enclave. When the Wilde family arrive, they trigger their neighbors’ worst fears. Dad Arlo’s a gruff has-been rock star with track marks. Mom Gertie’s got a thick Brooklyn accent, with high heels and tube tops to match. Their weird kids cuss like sailors. They don’t fit with the way Maple Street sees itself.

Domestic Drama
Revisado: 01-02-22
I liked this book but not enough to think about it after finishing or recommend it now that I am done.
This was a book club read and all of us that read it pretty much felt the same way.
The drama just seemed a little too far fetched, would call it more of a domestic drama than a thriller.
It kept you entertained enough to continue but never hooked any of us.

Historia
Jacob Finch Bonner was once a promising young novelist with a respectably published first book. Today, he’s teaching in a third-rate MFA program and struggling to maintain what’s left of his self-respect; he hasn’t written—let alone published—anything decent in years. When Evan Parker, his most arrogant student, announces he doesn’t need Jake’s help because the plot of his book in progress is a sure thing, Jake is prepared to dismiss the boast as typical amateur narcissism. But then...he hears the plot.

A worthwhile slow burner.
Revisado: 01-02-22
For me, this was a very entertaining book once you hit the half way point.
Thank goodness for my Goodread friends who all said it was a slow burner. If it wasn't for that, it would have made my DNF pile. I am glad that I took their advice and continued on.
Once it go going I was very interested on how this was going to play out. A great game of cat and mouse with some moral dilemma mixed in. Loved that!
If someone tells you an idea about a story and does nothing with it, is it stealing, especially if they are dead and even more so was a nasty person?
I don't know if I misunderstood but from what I did understand was that Even only let Jacob in on very little about his "plot" for his story that he was working on. So how did Jacob get so much of the story.
I did figure out the "who" early on but loved how it played out. Would definitely recommend to a friend. (less)

Revisado: 01-02-22
I so enjoyed this audiobook. I think every woman can relate to this book in some way. I think if every man was in a Bromance book club it would be a win win situation.
This book is about two people who love each other so much but as usual just communicate differently. The book club helped a bit with some funny as well as serious moments.
I loved hearing the narrator from the book that they were reading, it just totally made it for me.

Historia
It is a perfect July morning, and Elle, a 50-year-old happily married mother of three, awakens at “The Paper Palace” - the family summer place she has visited every summer of her life. But this morning is different: Last night, Elle and her oldest friend, Jonas, crept out the back door into the darkness and had sex with each other for the first time, all while their spouses chatted away inside. Now, Elle will have to decide between the life she has made with her genuinely beloved husband and the life she always imagined she would have had with her childhood love.

My favorite book of 2021!
Revisado: 01-02-22
I loved everything about this book until I read what others thought about it and then went back and reread the last chapter and now I am confused...Still loved it but need someone else to read it to discuss with, so I have a friend reading it and she is a quick reader. Whew!
So this book was not what I was expecting, I must have stopped at the part about the friends having sex while their spouses were in the house in the synopsis because I didn't see the abuse part coming at all. So please be aware that there are some hard to read scenes to do with incest and rape. But, I have to say I think the author did a great job with explaining why she didn't tell. I would think that most people reading would be like "Why didn't she stop it or why didn't she tell" I think reading you can understand why woman, especially young woman don't feel like they can tell.
This book is so much more than that though. It has love, a lot of different levels of love to think about. Lies, and just how do you keep such a huge thing a secret, the weight of it alone will do you in and can you be justified morally in your own soul? I have to say that during this book I must have had a poor moral compass because I didn't feel bad at all for what happens to Conrad. I think being there in person would have been different but reading it, not so much.
I ended up liking Wallace a lot especially her relationship with Peter. But if you pay attention to her upbringing, you get why she is the way she is.
So overall, great read and I think I am going to keep my original ending in my mind. Definitely a favorite of 2021

I liked this book a lot. I thought I would love it but I think for me, there being so many characters and their names weren’t easy to remember, made it a little hard for me to follow at times. I did listen to this book and the narration was great. I just have a hard time with the foreign names. That is totally on me, nothing to do with the story. If I had my time back, I would have just made a little note of who was who. Definitely worth listening or reading.

Not my favorite Harlan book but my favorite narrator. I love Steven Weber as a narrator. If it wasn't for him, I probably wouldn't have finished. Wasn't horrible just not what I have come to expect from Mr. Coben.
