Historia
When magic is up, electricity dies, cars stall, and skyscrapers tumble; when it's down, phones and guns work, and defensive spells can't protect your house from the creatures who stalk the streets. Equally dangerous are the competing factions of The Pack - a highly organized and military clan who governs Atlanta's were-bears, -wolves, and -hyenas - versus the Masters of the Dead, power and knowledge-hungry necromancers whose minds control hordes of blood-crazed vampires.

Great series!
Revisado: 09-28-23
Great series with a great narrator. Have read it many times. I don't enjoy the over-dramatization full cast version. A single talented narrator makes for the best reading experience. Character development is much deeper whereas dramatization is all flash.

Historia
Life is busier than ever for Innkeeper Dina DeMille and Sean Evans. But it’s about to get even more chaotic when Sean's werewolf mentor is kidnapped. To find him, they must host an intergalactic spouse-search for one of the most powerful rulers in the Galaxy. Dina is never one to back down from a challenge. That is, if she can manage her temperamental Red Cleaver chef; the consequences of her favorite Galactic ex-tyrant's dark history; the tangled politics of an interstellar nation; and oh, yes, keep the wedding candidates from a dozen alien species from killing each other.

Fun series!
Revisado: 09-26-23
So, Nora Sofyan is not Renee Raudman (who is in a class by herself) but I think she did a good job. She clearly listened to previous books in the series and tried to bring some continuity to the characters. Most narrators who take over in a series don't bother. As for the chapter intros, the authors explained why they were there. I wouldn't want them in all the books but they didn't detract from the story. I still thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for the next installment! Just please don't make it a full cast dramatization! Those ruin books by not allowing the reader to use their own imagination and they over dramatize like a movie.. Also, I listen to books when falling asleep and I want to relax. I'll take a single good narrator any day.

Historia
Hilketa is a frenetic and violent pastime where players attack each other with swords and hammers. The main goal of the game: obtain your opponent's head and carry it through the goalposts. With flesh and bone bodies, a sport like this would be impossible. But all the players are "threeps", robot-like bodies controlled by people with Haden's Syndrome, so anything goes. No one gets hurt, but the brutality is real, and the crowds love it. Until a star athlete drops dead on the playing field.

Interesting but too short series. Really liked the characters. I previewed both narrators and although they were both good, I found Amber Benson had better pacing and brought the characters and story to life better.

Historia
Reena Hale’s destiny was shaped in the destructive - yet fascinatingly beautiful - fire that leveled her family’s pizzeria when she was young. Now an arson investigator, she finds her strength and wits constantly tested, although sometimes the job seems like a snap compared to her love life. But she can’t always blame the men. After all, a soot-caked woman barking orders and smelling of smoke isn’t the biggest turn-on in the world. Then she meets Bo Goodnight, who seems different.

Another good adventure story narrated by one of my favorite narrators. I really enjoyed following Jack and George as they grew up as well as the rest of the Edge gang.

Love this series and it was fun to see what the next generation is up to. I hope there will be more in the world of Kate Daniels.
Unfortunately, the narrator is not a voice actress. She has a pleasant enough voice but just reads the lines. All the characters sound the same. She fails to bring the characters or story to life.

Historia
"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

Revisado: 05-16-21
I was looking for a new urban fantasy series and this looked promising. I like books that have a range of characters of different ages, races, experiences, etc. Unfortunately, the writing felt preachy and juvenile. The endless comments about age were annoying, when the main character was only 40ish. Also, the characters were contradictory and not credible. Is the alpha male a muscle-flexing buffoon or a powerful, intimidating protector of the town? Our uninspiring main character, who stayed in a bad relationship allowing herself to be used when she could have gotten out and done something else with her life, feels compelled to give us endless mom advice, takes pot shots at males and gives sensitivity training to the alpha male. Ugh. This one is going back!

Not an enjoyable listen but good story
Revisado: 03-04-20
WHY oh WHY must authors change narrators in the middle of a series? That is a major no-no, especially when you already have an excellent voice actress (Renee Raudman) that your fans love and associate with your books! Would you change actors in the middle of a TV series?
Ms Rankin has some annoying speech patterns, especially the exaggerated 't's at the end of words. More importantly, nearly all the characters sound the same making it hard to know who was speaking. There is minimal variation in speech patterns, accents or tone of voice to distinguish Mad Rogan from Catalina. There is no sense of power or threat from the Primes. Bug lost his jitters. Catalina's mom lacks the sense of authority and command of an ex sergeant and so on. Characters lose credibility when the voice doesn't fit the character. They become flat and lifeless or just plain irritating. There are a number of very powerful magic users in this series that are constantly at war with each other. There are some exciting actions scenes with nasty bad guys. This narrator did not do them justice with her lack of skill as a voice actress. The overall effect is as though a bunch of teenager narrators are trying to read the part of the adults and it falls flat.
I LOVED the first 3 books in the series! They are even better than the Kate Daniels series. This book is a struggle to get through because of the narration. The story is good but does have some annoying teenage angst. It is a coming of age story for Catalina who must take over as head of House Baylor. Her teenage crush, Allesandro, has some interesting magical powers. (No spoilers here). Ilona Andrews never fails to delight with their fresh take on the paranormal world!

Ray + Joyce Bean = Hilarious!!!
Revisado: 09-09-19
***SPOILER ALERT**** Well, maybe.
In book 1, Dory discovered that Fae wine helped control her 'fits' but it also damaged the mental barrier separating her from her vampire half. In book 2, the broken barrier allows Dory to begin to recover memories of her mother and her childhood. She begins to realize how much her estranged father, Mircea, actually loves her and fought to keep her alive. Her kind doesn't usually survive too long.
Now Dory is working for Mircea and the vampire Senate. Usually she kills problem vampires, but Mircea wants a particular vamp brought in alive for questioning. Dory opts for the portable version to make him easier to carry. A number of hilarious scenes ensue as she carries Ray's talking head around in her duffel bag pursued by her various others who want him back. Everyone seems to want Ray, including Louis-Cesare. Ray instantly became one of my favorite characters!
The way Louis-Cesare and Dory's relationship continues to develop is also rather entertaining. As always, Ms Chance delights us with her humor, chaotic action scenes, romance and engaging characters. She is one of the most creative, inventive writers I have encountered.
Joyce Bean is perfect for this series! Each character has a distinctive voice or accent and she does humor really well!
