Very detailed, but left out the most important detail of all.

If you have become obsessed about this case, like I have, then this book is worth a read or listen. This is my fourth book on this case, along with 100 or so YouTube videos, and I think I know this case almost as well as the investigators. There’s only two possible perpetrators that committed this crime. It’s either Burke Ramsey or an intruder. It could not have been the father John Ramsey because there’s no way he could’ve ever gotten his wife to write the ransom note or not turn on him when she found out that her beloved daughter was sexually assaulted. And it could not be Patsy Ramsey because the autopsy evidence is pretty clear that the daughter was strangled first (petechial hemorrhaging in the eyes and half moon fingernail marks above the ligature) and then struck on the head with a vicious blow.

Kolar attempts to make the case that Burke did it and that’s what drew me to listen to this book. I initially thought Burke did it also. I wanted to see what evidence Kolar put forth. In the end, he would lose his case in a court of law because he does not prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. I think he does a decent job at negating some of the evidence of the intruder theory proposed by famed investigator Lou Smit. But the problem is that Kolar never described his theory on how Burke actually did it and how the parents found their daughter and staged the crime. He only describes that Burke likely did it. But where are the details? And the details matter.

There is no way that a nine-year-old could have created a garrote with sophisticated knots, broken a thick wooden paint brush handle into 3 pieces, cut parachute cord (who has that in their house) in her bedroom, etc. Most people agree with this logic and say that is what the father John did AFTER they found JonBenet. But that creates a HUGE problem! That means that Burke did not strangle her, but struck her on the head (which goes against the autopsy evidence.) But… if that is the case, the parents would have called 911 if they discovered their unconscious or dead daughter without knowing who or how this happened.

It is important to remember that there’s absolutely no evidence of any trauma to JonBenét’s head by just looking at her. Even the police officers did not know she was struck on the head. This was only found at autopsy and not with a simple visual examination of the outside of her head.

It is extremely unlikely that if they found JB AFTER the head assault they would just assume…”she is probably dead, Oh, and Burke must have done it… and let’s now create the most ridiculous staging… create a garrote, write a 3 page ransom note, instead of just saying she fell down the stairs? If they SAW Burke strike her, they DEFINITELY would have called 911 immediately to try to save her life.

After studying this true crime case for many months, I simply cannot think of any scenario in which Burke commits this crime that makes sense in light of ALL of the evidence. And apparently, Kolar cannot think of any way either, because he never provides the details of how Burke did it, or where the assault occurred, or when it happened, or what implement was used to strike her, or anything like this. This is a huge problem!

On top of this major problem of the book, as other reviewers have mentioned, the narration is not very good at all. The woman who reads the book sounds like an AI generated voice with no emotion or intonation.

Don’t get me wrong, the book is well written, detailed and organized well and offers a few gems of insight. If you are an avid follower of this case, it is worth a listen. But it does not solve the case beyond a reasonable doubt. DA Alex Hunter was correct when he decided to not take this case to trial.

Great podcast. Dr. Collins has always fascinated me. There is no doubt that his life’s work has helped people immeasurably, and he is to be commended for it. He also seems like a genuinely nice guy. But I personally find it amazing that he discusses how people should come to correct decisions… And yet, he is a Bible believing Christian. The Bible is filled with stories of the most ridiculous kind, and is littered with many, many provable falsehoods and inconsistencies. I cannot help but think that while he’s trying to remove the spec from someone else’s eye, he chooses to keep a plank in his own. As Sam Harris would say, he believes Jesus is God on really, really bad evidence. So hypocritical… and sad really.

This is my 6th or 7th book that I have read from world renowned New Testament scholar Bart Ehrman. All of them are excellent. The narration is very good, but as others have said, you might want to speed it up a little. The combination of the authors scholarly expertise in the field with impeccable logic makes his case convincing. The manuscripts that we have on the New Testament show in numerous places that they have been edited and changed. Moreover, all of the copies of the copies of the copies that we do have…. contain thousands of differences in them… and some of them are quite significant. Read or listen to the book and judge for yourself.

This book is written by the often discredited Robert F Kennedy, Jr. who became good friends with Michael Skakel, as they reached sobriety together. RFK is the guy that has been disowned by own his family for lacking basic logic and reasoning skills. This is the guy who thinks vaccines are bad for you when all the scientists from all of the nations around the world know otherwise.

I have read all four major books recently on the Moxley case. (Levitt, Dumas, Fuhrman and RFK, Jr.) Of the four, the one by Leonard Levitt is the best… and this was the worst despite a great reading by the narrator. As other reviewers have stated, Kennedy throws the “spaghetti,” aka suspects, against the wall to see which one will stick. Eventually, he concludes the most likely killers were two out of town, black kids from New York City, despite not being seen by anyone at all that night… and having no motive for the crime… and brought forth by a guy who is well known to habitually lie.

While RFK does bring up some valid points about Michael Skakel‘s defense team, the real problem with this book is all of the information he conveniently left out that points to Michael Skakel being the killer.

Completely ignored is the trial testimony from Michael’s older brothers… who said they could not remember if Michael was with them on the night of the murder. Really??? Do you honestly think a family member could ever forget such a thing! On top of that, in trial testimony, Michael’s sister, Julie, said she called out to him “Michael come here!”when he was sneaking around the garage… when Michael supposedly had ALREADY left to his cousin’s house.

RFK mysteriously leaves out this REALLY key information from his book… and simply states, “Michael has an airtight alibi,” on the night of the murder.

RFK also leaves out much of the testimony from more than a dozen witnesses that came forth during the trial, saying that Michael admitted to, or strongly implied, killing Martha.

There is a reason why this book was free on the Audible app. It’s a one-sided look at the Moxley case. I would suggest reading the other books if you want a more balanced look at this terrible and tragic murder.

This book was excellent. It is more of a science book… or a book on logical reasoning than a book on theology. We now live in an age where the evidence both for and against Christianity is widely available for anyone truly interested in examining both sides of the debate. The problem is this, very few people employ the logical reasoning that is spelled out in this book, in order to make the correct decision. As the famous expression goes: you cannot reason someone out of faith, because they didn’t reason into the faith. We need more people to know how to think and not what to think. This book, along with Bart Ehman’s book, Jesus Before the Gospels, should be required reading for anyone seeking the truth.

For anyone serious about learning the New Testament, this course is for you. Dr. Ehrman is the best teacher on the subject that I have come across in 35 years of Biblical study.
