Historia
The ninth floor. Nine armies, each led by rich and powerful aliens from across the galaxy. Each team has one objective: to capture and hold the castle at the very center of the battlefield. Strategy, alliances, pitched battles, and, of course, betrayal ... It all makes for great fun and even greater television. After all, none of these powerful aliens really die when they’re playing war. Except this time. This time, winner takes all. Those who fall, stay in the ground.

Historia
If it weren’t for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone. Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time.

Author's Narration
Revisado: 09-08-24
I should preface this review by saying that I'm A HUGE Whoopi Goldberg fan. So my review will be biased.
Warning ⚠️ Do not listen when driving! I laughed and cried so many times with this book.
This book is an homage to her mother and brother. And Whoopi did it right. Her narration feels as if you are setting across from her, and she's telling you the story.
For me, I connected to the rememberances of her mother's ethics. But also to the 3 years of bad times due to the mental breakdown.
The things her mother went through as a woman of color. Giving the best life to her 2 children. Her mother being suppressed by laws denied to women.
It's proof that bits and pieces of a person's life can coalesce into a beautiful finale.

I love the way history is used in this story. The author did an excellent job showing the trauma her people have suffered through the ages.

Historia
Indian American journalist Smita has returned to India to cover a story, but reluctantly: long ago she and her family left the country with no intention of ever coming back. As she follows the case of Meena—a Hindu woman attacked by members of her own village and her own family for marrying a Muslim man—Smita comes face to face with a society where tradition carries more weight than one’s own heart, and a story that threatens to unearth the painful secrets of Smita’s own past.

I loved the way the characters were introduced. We met them as humans, not the beautiful imaginary perfect people.

Best Book Read This Year
Revisado: 03-25-23
I know I'm only 3 months into 2023, but I can't imagine finding another book as good as this.
The heartbreaking story of 3 people, each with their own demons and the forgiveness they reach is amazing. But the journey of them getting there, tears the reader apart.

White woman's voice for another culture
Revisado: 01-25-23
As the book started I wondered why I couldn't get into it. Having read many books by Japanese authors, the flow wasn't there.
I guess it was an okay story, but it wasn't from the voice of a person who lived through the atrocities of nuclear genocide.
Throughout the book it sounded as if it was the story of a non-Japanese told as if they had lived through the bomb.

Historia
What happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke remains a mystery, but the women who descended from Eleanor Dare have long known that the truth lies in what she left behind: a message carved onto a large stone and the contents of her treasured commonplace book. Brought from England on Eleanor’s fateful voyage to the New World, her book was passed down through the fifteen generations of daughters who followed as they came of age.

Never is an extraordinary novel, full of heroines and villains, false prophets and elite warriors, jaded politicians and opportunistic revolutionaries. It brims with cautionary wisdom for our times, and delivers a visceral, heart-pounding story that transports listeners to the brink of the unimaginable.

Yeah, it would happen just about like that
Revisado: 04-07-22
I'm writing this review after reading this book in 2022. With all that's going on in the world it really could happen like this we divert our attention to other things happening while others sneak in through the back door.
In the book there are four sets of characters and we listened to the lives and stories of these eight people. Our attention was diverted by two sets of these characters.
This book really does show what is going on in the world. When we tunnel vision one issue and ignore what is really going on around us we are doomed to fail.
well done Ken Follett.

Historia
Cast out of the royal court by Eleanor of Aquitaine, deemed too coarse and rough-hewn for marriage or courtly life, seventeen-year-old Marie de France is sent to England to be the new prioress of an impoverished abbey, its nuns on the brink of starvation and beset by disease. At first taken aback by the severity of her new life, Marie finds focus and love in collective life with her singular and mercurial sisters. In this crucible, Marie steadily supplants her desire for family, for her homeland, for the passions of her youth with something new to her.

Dragged on with nothing to say
Revisado: 02-16-22
I listened to the first hour thinking it was the prologue. I truly hoped the storyline would Improve and it never did.
The book can easily be summed up as warrior princess becomes a nun and lives in a convent. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up, no details.
