In rural Devon, six-year-old Joanna Mason witnesses an appalling crime. Thirty years later the man convicted of the crime is released from prison. In Edinburgh, sixteen-year-old Reggie works as a nanny for a G.P. But Dr Hunter has gone missing and Reggie seems to be the only person who is worried. Love, love, love Atkinson. This book has so many intelligent twists and turns and keeps you on the edge of your seat all along. The reader is great too, though susan who read the first brody book was my favourite.

Then the mark: Ryan Sumner. The last piece of the puzzle is the job. Evie isn’t privy to Mr. Smith’s real identity, but she knows this job isn't like the others. Ryan has gotten under her skin, and she’s starting to envision a different sort of life for herself. But Evie can’t make any mistakes—especially after what happened last time.

Easy read, not amazing
Revisado: 07-05-24
The story is entertaining with some nice twists. It‘s not a literary masterpiece though, I would have enjoyed a bit more subtleties. While I found it an entertaining listen, I was never suuper gripped. The reader does a great job.

Historia
It was supposed to be a romantic getaway weekend in New York City. Breanna’s new boyfriend, Ty, took care of everything—the train tickets, the dinner reservations, the rented four-story luxury rowhouse in Jersey City with a beautiful view of the Manhattan skyline. But when Bree comes downstairs their final morning, she’s shocked. There’s a stranger laying dead in the foyer, and Ty is nowhere to be found.

Such a shame!
Revisado: 05-12-24
I absolutely adore Kellye Garrett, and have devoured all her audiobooks which are read sublimely by Bahni Turpin. I don‘t know what happened here that they didn‘t let Turpin read this one too. I just can‘t get through this one. Blake has a lovely voice, but she reads so slowly and flatly that I can‘t follow what she‘s saying. The sentences fall apart into single words. There is no emotion or pace. A real shame. Please give the job back to Turpin.

Historia
Julia Fox is famous for many things: her captivating acting, such as her breakout role in the film Uncut Gems; her trendsetting style, including bleached eyebrows, exaggerated eyeshadow, and cutout dresses; her mastery of social media, where she entertains and educates her millions of followers. But all these share the trait for which she is most famous: unabashedly and unapologetically being herself. This commitment to authenticity has never been more on display than in Down the Drain. With writing that is both eloquent and accessible, Fox recounts her turbulent path to cultural supremacy.

Amazing
Revisado: 11-01-23
This book amazed me! Few people, not to mention celebrities, have as much guts, depth, and loyalty as her. I really wasn‘t expecting to be so pulled in by her story and impressed by her as a person. The past week I‘ve felt like I‘ve had this friend looking over my shoulder, and I would sometimes get „flashbacks“ to parts of this story. She is amazing, listen to the book.

Historia
Cotswolds inhabitants are used to inclement weather, but the night sky is especially foggy as Rory and Molly Devere, the new vicar and his wife, drive home from a dinner party in their village of Sumpton Harcourt. They strain to see the road ahead - and then suddenly brake, screeching to a halt. Right in front of them, aglow in the headlights, a body hangs from a gnarled tree at the edge of town. Margaret Darby, an elderly spinster, has been murdered - and the villagers are bewildered as to who would commit such a crime.

sad
Revisado: 01-09-23
have to agree with fellow reviewer Karen on this one. I love love love Agatha Raisin, but something went very wrong here. As Karen mentioned, the writing is rather bad on this one. Editing errors, name changes but also clumsily written scenes. MC Beaton normally has me laughing out loud with her well-written dialogue, but here everything was stilted. Penelope Keith reads it rather lacklustre, it made me wonder whether something had happened to cause such a sad reading, when normally she is the best of the best. All in all an (audio) book that doesn't even come close to its predecessors.

Cotswolds inhabitants are used to bad weather, but the night sky is especially foggy as Rory and Molly Harris, the new vicar and his wife, drive slowly home from a dinner party in their village of Sumpton Harcourt. They struggle to see the road ahead - but then screech to a halt. Right in front of them, aglow in the headlights of their car, a body hangs from a lightning-blasted tree at the edge of town. But it's not suicide; Margaret Darby, an elderly spinster of the parish, has been murdered - and the villagers are bewildered as to who would commit such a crime, and why.

Historia
Charles Paris returns again, in a fringe show at the Edinburgh Festival, with another nubile girl to provoke him, his accommodating wife to console him and a gory murder to challenge him. Edinburgh and the Festival are both background and foreground with Charles flitting between a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a ‘mixed-media’ satire, a late-night revue and his own one-man show on Thomas Hood. Then a fading pop star is murdered, there’s a bomb scare in Holyrood Palace and someone makes a suicide leap from the top of the Rock….

Landing a minor part in the Empire Theatre Eastbourne’s Christmas production of Cinderella, Charles Paris soon discovers that his main role is to gently introduce the show’s baffled American star, Kenny Polizzi, to the bizarre customs of English pantomime. During their sessions in the local pub, Charles finds himself increasingly caught up in Polizzi’s tangled affairs. But Charles is about to be far more involved than he might wish when he stumbles across a body beneath Eastbourne Pier.

"A vogue-ish obsession"
Revisado: 08-24-22
I adore all the works of Simon Brett. That being said, there is a streak of sexism throughout his work. Normally I can just ignore this, because I enjoy the cosyness of his writng and his excellent reading skills so much. This book, however, trivialises an affair between a grown man and a 14 year-old girl: The tone of the book implies that this used to be standard procedure and that is only "fashionable" these days to make a big deal about it retroactively: it describes this as a "a voguesh obsession with historical sex crime". It also frames victims who speak out as pretenders. I find this shocking. Anyone who has ever spent a lengthy amount of time with, or cared about, a 14 year-old girl, would not want to read about her being abused in such an off-hand manner.
Yes, I am sure there have been times when it was normal to wed off 14 year-olds, but there have also been times when women weren't allowed to vote. Not sure that we should adapt our standards to historical normalcies.

Miranda?
Revisado: 06-23-22
As usual I loved this Fethering story. However, as Fethering novels go, I found it one of the less amazing ones. My biggest issue was that I honestly couldn't understand why no-one told Miranda what really happened to her son. Such an omission seems unnecessarily cruel, and didn't make any sense to me as a reader.

Historia
Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up – to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? – he’s not there.

why so slow?
Revisado: 03-02-22
the lady who reads Jess' character does so at such a painstakingly slow speed that it feels like an artificial tension build-up with the effect of annoyi g me rather than exciting me. I have never done this before, but I set the speed to 1.2 in order for the pace to feel more natural. However, this didn't work as there are other readers as well, who speak at a more natural pace. speeding those up meant it was too quick all of a sudden.
i don't know if it was because of the reading or also the story, but I liked this one less than "The Guest List" or "The Hunting Party".
