Historia
Horatio Alger, Jr. (1832-1899) wrote over 100 ‘rags-to-riches’ novels, often about teenage boys forced by circumstances to earn their own living selling newspapers, blacking boots, carrying luggage, or tending store. Alger’s heroes are honest, temperate, generous, and brave, good in a fight and ready to protect a weaker boy from a bully. Alger stresses work, study, and thrift as ways to escape poverty. Alger’s villains, on the other hand, are usually dishonest, sometimes alcoholic or brutal.

Christopher Crennen - Audibles worst narrator
Revisado: 09-13-24
A random person walking down the aisles of Walmart could have done a better job at narrating this story than Christopher Crennen. The man has less than zero talent. I didn’t realize it’s possible to have negative talent but Christopher Crennen’s monotonous voice has made me realized how true that is. He is astoundingly awful.

Can anyone be a narrator? Apparently…
Revisado: 09-13-24
Christopher Crennen made listening to these stories unbearable. I wasn’t aware that a person with zero talent could actually narrate for Audible. He literally reads with no inflection in his voice. Every character, whether British or American, male or female sounds the same. Oh… until he randomly tries to produce an Irish accent which is truly awful. I made the mistake of purchasing all of the Horacio Alger books not realizing some random guy was just looking for a side hustle by reading books in the public domain. Audible… I’m refunding these awfully narrated books. Shame on me for not sampling them first.

Historia
A classic thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Crichton, Sphere is a bravura demonstration of what he does better than anyone: riveting storytelling that combines frighteningly plausible, cutting-edge science and technology with pulse-pounding action and serious chills.

Interesting Concept Goes Flat
Revisado: 03-21-24
Scott Brick could narrate a book about paint drying and I would still listen. Unfortunately, Michael Crichton’s sizzling idea fizzled out slowly and I walked away feeling bored and underwhelmed. Spoiler alert:
It’s pretty cliche to develop flat characters for the sole purpose of killing them off. In the end, I still had questions and felt confused and frustrated.

Historia
In a ruined and toxic landscape, a community exists in a giant silo underground, hundreds of stories deep. There, men and women live in a society full of regulations they believe are meant to protect them. Sheriff Holston, who has unwaveringly upheld the silo’s rules for years, unexpectedly breaks the greatest taboo of all: He asks to go outside.

Just okay.

The book was okay but it seemed to drag. I was disappointed by the end. It left me without the desire to continue reading. Character development was lacking.
