Historia
Although small enough to be an island, Sicily is also large enough to be a continent and has at least two souls: a Western and an Eastern one. These two souls of Sicily are ancient, when the island was inhabited by the Elymians and the Sikani. This ancient "rivalry" continued with Phoenicians and Greeks, Romans and Carthaginians. A trip to Sicily, therefore, is not only a journey through the history, culture, gastronomy, and flavors of a rich and generous land, but it is also a profound journey into the human soul and into the history!

Bad Quality
Revisado: 09-17-24
The audio quality is not great. The narration stops and skips mid-sentence which is not what you want from an audiobook. I got the audiobook to prepare for an upcoming trip and I was really interested in the content. HOWEVER. The narrator has trouble pronouncing the place names. Like nails on a chalk board every time.

The story itself didn't grab my attention, but I still would have finished it if the pronunciations from the narrator weren't so bad.

Historia
It's hard for modern listeners to truly grasp the spectacle that was arena sports in ancient Rome, which pitted man against man and man against beast in mortal combat. Our modern games of football and hockey, or even boxing and MMA, truly pale in comparison. The Gladiators is a comprehensive survey of these ancient sports, focusing on gladiatorial combat and the beast hunts (venationes).

Informative, but too many mispronunciations
Revisado: 04-15-24
It is very clear nobody informed the narrator how to pronounce some of the words properly. The one that immediately comes to mind is Caracalla...he pronounces it like Dracula. There are other instances, but that one is really noticeable.

Historia
It is hard to find an island on the map more central than Sicily. Located at the crossroads between Europe and Africa, and between the eastern and western Mediterranean, Sicily has rarely been governed as an independent, unified state. Nonetheless, the island has always occupied a front-row seat to some of the most important events in history.

New narrator, please!
Revisado: 06-21-23
I need a narrator who actually knows how to pronounce the proper names properly. Every time he mispronounces something (which is quite often), it's like nails on a chalk board to me. I know it's only two hours long, but I can't make it. Not worth it.

Historia
"Good people, I am come hither to die, and by a law I am condemned to the same." These were the heartbreaking words of a 17-year-old girl, Lady Jane Grey, as she stood on the scaffold awaiting death on a cold February morning in 1554. Minutes later, her head was struck from her body with a single stroke of a heavy ax. Her death for high treason sent shock waves through the Tudor world and served as a gruesome reminder to all who aspired to a crown that the ax could fall at any time.

Book isn't bad, but Narrator is!
Revisado: 01-17-23
I listened to this audiobook on 1.7x speed and that seemed to help the narration, but there were still moments here and there when it was just grating. I started the audio on normal speed just to see if the narrator was really as bad as what other reviewers have said, and good Lord...I couldn't do it.

Historia
It's difficult to imagine a nation with a history more compelling for Americans than Russia. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, this was the nation against which we measured our own nation's values and power and with whom war, if it ever came, could spell unimaginable catastrophe for our planet.Yet many Americans have never had the opportunity to study Russia in depth, and to see how the forces of history came together to shape a future so different from the dreams of most ordinary Russian people, eager to see their nation embrace Western values of progress, human rights, and justice.

Doesn’t Know His Antiquities
Revisado: 05-06-22
Several times he refers to something that’s Roman as Greek. For instance…”the great Greek philosopher king Marcus Aurelius”…Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor, not a Greek king. Tsar/Czar is the Russian form of “Caesar” the title used for Roman rulers, not Greek rulers.
I know his specialty is Russian history, but this is pretty basic stuff especially for a historian.

Historia
McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

The content- great! Narration...not so much.
Revisado: 12-15-20
I enjoyed the book and it held my interest, but I could have done with a different narrator.
The narrator read way too slow and mispronounced a lot of words that completely took me out of the story. I had the narration speed on 1.6x just to get it to a normal speed. I would've gone faster, but I listen while working and didn't want too fast.

The end killed it for me
Revisado: 05-25-19
The book for the most part was very informative without delving into too much detail. HOWEVER at the very end...the author lets us know how he really feels about communism and that Russia is a great example of how it's a horrible idea. And that's fine. Communism is bad and we get that, but I also didn't listen to this book for 1950s "Red Scare" rhetoric.

From the horseback days of the Old West through the gangster days of the 1930s, Hamer stood on the front lines of some of the most important and exciting periods in American history. He participated in the Bandit War of 1915, survived the climactic gunfight in the last blood feud of the Old West, battled the Mexican Revolution's spillover across the border, protected African Americans from lynch mobs and the Ku Klux Klan, and ran down gangsters, bootleggers, and Communists.

I only had a few issues
Revisado: 04-01-19
I loved the book and the narration wasn't bad, but there were a few things that did annoy me. The author is not from Texas and it shows. There were many instances where the author referred to Texas towns (like Bryan) as being in East Texas. Bryan is not in East Texas. Houston is not in East Texas. I know those are little details, but they're simple details that could be gained by just looking at a map or asking any Texan in the area. Aside from that, I really did enjoy the book.
