Narrator is far better than the book
Revisado: 09-23-22
This is fairly well written. The narrator is the very best available. However, the repetitive trauma of the story line is no excuse for a book.

Historia
It is 1950. London is still reeling from World War II, and Margery Benson, a schoolteacher and spinster, is trying to get through life, surviving on scraps. One day, she reaches her breaking point, abandoning her job and small existence to set out on an expedition to the other side of the world in search of her childhood obsession: an insect that may or may not exist - the golden beetle of New Caledonia. When she advertises for an assistant to accompany her, the woman she ends up with is the last person she had in mind.

A well-written panorama of human tragedy
Revisado: 07-03-21
The listing quoted a Kirkus review describing this book as an “hilarious” adventure of two women. The book is rarely amusing and is generally a tale of human suffering. One wonders if the reviewer failed to read the book or if the premise of the review is that women’s denigration by our culture, suffering and abuse is “hilarious.” The book is well written, inventive, violent and poignant. It displays the courage of women in the face of dead dreams and personal tragedy. My rating is based on my dashed expectations, not the writer’s work. If you’re looking for hilarious, this is not the book.

Historia
Certainly the two should never have met. The handsome, wealthy Marquess of Rockingham was the most notorious man in London, as infamous for his violent temper as he was for his intemperate ways. Miss Lucinda Westerville was a country vicar's daughter, as innocent as she was lovely and as proper as a young lady could possibly be. Yet when this improbably matched pair met at a glittering social ball, they had struck the dubious bargain to become man and wife.

Disappointing, even for a light romance
Revisado: 06-12-21
She falls in love despite an “in name only” husband
who attempts to rape her several times and is generally drunk and violent. Golly, he bought her a necklace, was nice to her father and planned a flower garden without her knowledge, so upon hearing this she jumps in his bed and what? I imagine a life of drunkenness and physical and emotional abuse. Narrator understands what an idiot this woman is by giving her a high pitched silly voice despite the author indicating she is a clever, hardworking, thrifty (yet beautiful) housewife with a laudable self-sacrificing love for her father.

Disappointing for history buffs
Revisado: 08-24-18
In addition to a faint buzz on the recording, the fine reader is ill served by the thin plot and poorly developed characters. The light use of Winston Churchill as a character and excerpts from his most famous wartime speeches is, at best, disrespectful of the man and his enormous contribution to the world. At worst, this book is a crass misuse of our greatest generation’s suffering and courage to provide a gimmick for a poorly crafted book.

Enjoyed this series so much that I put up with a soft roaring sound in the background, much like the sound of a heartbeat on sonogram.

Historia
Marion Sharpe and her mother seem an unlikely duo to be found on the wrong side of the law. Quiet and ordinary, they have led a peaceful and unremarkable life at their country home, The Franchise. Unremarkable that is, until the police turn up with a demure young woman on their doorstep. Not only does Betty Kane accuse them of kidnap and abuse, she can back up her claim with a detailed description of the attic room in which she was kept, right down to the crack in its round window.

Historia
Best-selling novelist Bernard Cornwell crafts a thrilling tale from his immensely popular Richard Sharpe series. In 1809 Lieutenant Sharpe and his riflemen are in Portugal, preparing for Napoleon’s next strike. The smaller English force will probably pull out before it’s too late, but not Sharpe. His orders are to find the missing daughter of an English wine shipper. Just as Sharpe and his men begin their mission, the French launch their punishing assault.

Excellent book but missing pages
Revisado: 04-01-17
I loved this book. It's was very good at eliciting emotion and as always had a satisfying ending but the recording is missing the last several pages of the book which contains the historical note. This is generally my favorite thing about Cornwalls books so it was very disappointing to have it missing. Please find a way to correct that.
