Historia
Bellona is a city at the dead center of the United States. Something has happened there...the population has fled. Madmen and criminals wander the streets. Strange portents appear in the cloud-covered sky. And into this disaster zone comes a young man - a poet, a lover, and an adventurer - known only as the Kid.

Easily one of my favorite books of all time
Revisado: 09-02-22
I think the audio book is by far the best way to experience the book. The reader is clearly an accomplished performer and is excellent at acting out the scenes.
To enjoy this book you have to understand that:
The author purposefully frustrates the reader to create a psychological effect. As you experience the book, you come to enjoy these frustrations and understand their purpose. You also understand that your frustration is part of the story, intentional, and is actually GOOD writing, not bad writing or the author doing something in error.
This book is not action filled. It is about relationships, subtlety, and other such things.
This book legitimately plays out the reality of a how an inner city American community might function in response to an apocalyptic event.
The book is a work of art in the way of mastering show don't tell.
Know that the author is a person of color and this was written in the late 60's, so the radicalized language is a product of it's time. Also, the author specifically intended to name people of color at the time because science fiction was completely white washed.
CW: rape, underage sex, racialized violence

Historia
Never had there been as close a bonding as the one that existed between the daring and adventurous young Lord Jaxom and his extraordinary white dragon, Ruth. Pure white and incredibly agile, Ruth was a dragon of many talents, though almost everyone on Pern thought he was a runt that would never amount to anything. But Jaxom knew better.

Pulpy, insubstantial, unexciting, no big moments

Couldn't have cared less about the characters, tho the world building was slightly satisfying. I dont recommend it.

On the beautiful planet Pern, colonized for centuries, Land Holders and Craftsmen have traditionally tithed food and supplies to the dragonweyrs to which they are bound. Narration not for everyone
Revisado: 08-18-20
I love the story, but this narrator wasn't to my taste. his over acting rly ruined the book. He was overly enthusiastic, especially in the non dialogue passages. He also had very little variation between characters and cant do women's voices to save his life. There's no excuse for that in a book written by a woman and a book that so many women love. I'm sad I'll have to listen to him for another 10 or so books :'(

The Sharers of Shora are a nation of women on a distant moon in the far future. They are pacifists, they are highly advanced in biological sciences, and they reproduce by parthenogenesis - because there are no males. Conflict erupts when a militaristic neighboring civilization decides to develop their ocean world and sends in an army.

My top 3 books of all time
Revisado: 08-06-20
I can't say enough good about this book. It's basically a feminist Dune. The performance is much in the older audio book style: slow and not super pronounced, but the reader does change voices for each character.
If you don't like feminism, don't bother obviously. It's tiring to read reviews complaining that this is a feminist book for having an all female society, when 99% of scifi is about male characters and worlds, dominated by men... this is a book by and for women, and for men intelligent enough to care about what that kind of speculation means to women of our world.

Historia
The Muad'Dib's jihad is in full swing. His warrior legions march from victory to victory. But beneath the joy of victory there are dangerous undercurrents. Paul, like nearly every great conqueror, has enemies - those who would betray him to steal the awesome power he commands. Paul himself begins to have doubts: Is the jihad getting out of his control? Has he created anarchy? Has he been betrayed by those he loves and trusts the most? And most of all, he wonders: Am I going mad?

Poor writing, a book for dude bros
Revisado: 04-02-20
I'm definitely struggling to finish this one. Definitely a boring listen. The pacing is poor and the story disjointed. The authors clearly don't know how to write multidimensional women, and they make an absolute mess of the one ostensibly gay character. Paul is slightly better written, but still highly one dimensional. Finally, which is one of the books greater sins, is that if you've just read or listened to Dune, you'll notice several inconsistencies in the plot and other details. The narration was good overall, but there was no female voice actor and the narrator did terrible female voices.
