First I'll mention that the narrator did a fantastic job on this story. There was a good bit of dialogue spoken by children, and the narrator managed to convey child-like voices in a genuine manner. I also enjoyed her Australian accent.

Having seen the television adaptation of Big Little Lies, there weren't many surprises that I didn't already know were coming. And yet knowing some of the big spoilers didn't take away from the impact of the book. The fact that the setting was Australia rather than California was a surprise, and in both cases, the setting works well so no complaints on either count.

This is the first Liane Moriarty novel I've read, and her writing is excellent. I personally appreciate the depth of insight into the characters as scenes would at times be interrupted by past recollections or explanations of why a certain character chose something or behaved in a certain way. Those moments never felt intrusive or out of place. The weaving in of characters being interviewed at the end of the story and the linear progression of the timeline worked very well to keep tensions high and made the book hard to put down.

The three main characters were fascinating, sometimes tragic, relatable, and often a lot of fun. Their lives felt very real, and their interactions with each other like real friendships between real women. The helicopter parents are like spicy food that makes your nose run. It's a little painful and enjoyable at the same time as spectacles can be, and all-too-true-to-life. Now that I'm a parent (with a child too young for school at the moment), I'm reflecting a lot on my own tendencies as a mother, and I see it as a sign of a good book when I'm self-reflecting as I read.

The domestic violence is portayed in what seems to be a realistic manner, and feels very authentic. This is from me, someone who has not personally experienced DV, so for someone reading who has experienced DV, their view could be quite different. I have spoken to female friends about their experiences with DV, and the abusive character in the novel rings true. It's heartbreaking when the abused wife talks herself out of leaving her abuser, and when she makes excuses for him and blames herself for her part in the volatile relationship. That also rings very true.

My only complaint is the cursing. I prefer books (and shows) with no swearing, and this book had a fair number of f-bombs (as did the show), which does fit with the characters, but I've always preferred foul language be left out. I realize I am probably in the minority, so other readers might not be bothered by it.

One of my favorite books (pair of books, rather) is Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. I was thrilled with this reimagining of the classic tale to include Vincent van Gogh as a young man joining Alice on an adventure. The story had all the electic, magical feel of the original while adding its own flare and twists. I'm very impressed with the author and the writing style. The narrator was excellent and I highly recommend this book to fans of both Lewis Carroll and Vincent van Gogh.

I really enjoyed this book. A friend recommended I read it and the audiobook was excellent. One complaint, if it's a complaint, is that I chose to up the speed to X1.25 because the reading felt slow to me. But that was an easy fix with the option to increase the reading speed.

The characters are very well developed and continually surprised me (pleasantly) as the story went along. The pair are fun to follow on their adventures, from their escape from a relentless mob family on a planet that grew more and more hostile to them to their association with the fascinating Clutch species and a final standoff with the frighteningly mysterious Extrang (forgive my spelling errors, not sure how to spell the species since I listened to the book rather than read it). And the romance was subtle, which I appreciated. The science fiction had touches of fantasy, and it was all delightful. The storytelling is very well done to reveal aspects of this futuristic space opera in bite sizes that are easily digestible and leaves the right amount of mystery and tension to make it difficult to put down.
Highly recommended.

This is my first time reading Ender's Game, and the audio production was incredibly well done. The story itself powerfully explores themes of coming of age, the costs/benefits of military action, the consequences of every decision a person makes, friends/enemies of war, and the methods by which we discover who we really are, all within the landscape of an alien invasion and humanity's last hope to avoid extinction.

At first, I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy the story as a bullying/self-preservation theme popped up immediately in the form of sibling torment, setting the stage for Ender's relentless battle to survive as an individual before he could ever hope to become the hero who might save the human race.

The violence depicted is not graphic, which allowed me to continue and quickly become hooked to the story. The science fiction elements (namely, the zero-gravity preparation battles in Battle School) are a delight to the sci-fi nerd in me.

The twist ending is unexpected, feels realistic, and completes the story in a fantastic way.

This edition includes a long interview with Orson Scott Card, and as a writer myself, I was eager to hear from the author who wrote this novel after publishing Ender's Game as a short story twenty years ago. His comments are fascinating and it's well worth listening through to the end.

Although this is the first time I have read anything by Robin Hobb it won't be the last. Her world is deep and wide, portrayed in such detail as to make it easy to forget this is not simply a historical fiction, but a magical world where those who works the skill may heal, travel through portals, and speak to animals. The narration was flawless and the voice actor did an excellent job.
