Historia
Ursula K. Le Guin was one of the most revered and influential writers of the 20th century. Her Earthsea books have sold millions of copies and been translated into numerous languages, while her trailblazing novel The Left Hand of Darkness was a landmark in feminist science fiction and ranks among the greatest SF novels of all time. This BBC collection brings together the magical radio retellings of both these seminal classics.

Too much fluff and interruptions.

Fantastic dramatization
Revisado: 10-06-24
The only thing I didn’t like was that it was unclear to me when I bought it that these are BBC produced dramatizations (great at that by the way), so they are condensed versions of the several Earthsea books, so it does feel short and plot events fly by. Still, it’s a fantastic production of the Earthsea books, TLHOD, and the last piece on the author is also great

Historia
There was a new shop in town. Run by a stranger. Needful Things, the sign said. The oddest name. A name that caused some gossip and speculation among the good folks of Castle Rock, Maine, while they waited for opening day. Eleven-year-old Brian Rusk was the first customer and he got just what he wanted, a very rare 1956 Sandy Koufax baseball card. Signed. Cyndi Rose Martin was next. A Lalique vase. A perfect match for her living room decor. Something for everyone.

Caveat Emptor, listener
Revisado: 08-26-24
“Buyer Beware” is the bitter moral of this story. Ironically, buyers of the audiobook version of the novel should keep the same warning in mind.
The story has a great premise with some good bits, but middling overall among King’s vast offering. Not his best neither his worst.
However, what drove me off the wall were the very low production values. Perhaps it was recorded on a budget in the early years of audiobooks, so it almost sounds like they were experimenting with these things, and definitely no one did a final edit. I had never before encountered this puzzling use of totally jarring, unnecessarily distracting, inappropriately placed, tacky jingles, sometimes even louder than Stephen King’s narration. The audio equivalent of topping a hotdog with ketchup, mustard, and then… chocolate fudge, why not?! Also, listening to him read out loud goes from interesting to boring, as his voice can drone on at times and his range of voices is limited, not at all up to par with a voice actor’s.
For these reasons, I cannot recommend this audiobook at all. Do get the paperback if you are a Stephen King fan, but do not waste expensive credits on this cheap audiobook that brings the story down.
