Couldn’t put it down

So often these types of books with a female protagonist fall into the same trap of the weak female who finds the strength to defeat evil or come into their own because of some stronger male character. The women in these books are so 2 dimensional, usually crippled by the trappings of their socialization and place in society, and often outshone by what should be the less important male characters. I did not find that with this book. The complexities and dualities of the characters were interesting, and I even felt a great amount of pity for the dragon. Really well done and I will read more from this author!

Absolutely lovely

This book was beautifully written and performed. I love this genre, both in terms of historical fiction, and then in taking a sliver of how we view that history today and writing about it from a completely different perspective. It reminded me of the book Ahab’s Wife, which was also wonderful. This book had its moments of beauty and humor, and of course, devastating tragedy.

Incredibly interesting lecture

I appreciate the author’s meticulous research into not only what our founders wrote but analysis into personal documents to get an understanding of what they most likely believed. I very much enjoyed his presentation style, too.

It’s ironic reading the one-star reviews who clearly wanted the author to fall on the side of Christianity. We’re as divided today as they were. Sadly, so much false information has worked its way into our history (i.e. Washington’s cherry tree) and is now assumed to be fact.

So fun! The acting was superb and the storyline was so entertaining. I finished it in one weekend. We need a part 2!

One of Stephen King’s Best!

I’ve read lots of King over the years, but if I didn’t know it was him, I would have never guessed. Such a fun and engaging story, I finished it in less than a week. The narrator also does a fantastic job, and I found myself laughing out loud at some of his voices (in a good way!). Great work all around.

Very fun!

This is a departure from his typical work, and I felt like I was listening to an old fashioned radio show. The acting was great, no surprise. And this kept me very entertained. I hope he does more of these short stories!

Disappointing

I had a goal of listening to all the classics I could squeeze in this year, and they were fantastic. This one? Not so much. It turns into a “spiritual journey,” but not really. Unlike The Alchemist or any other book taking the reader through a beautiful, meaningful spiritual journey (even like Eat, Pray, Love!), this is all fire, brimstone and regret. I left this book where he is stuck on the island talking about how if he’s only left his sinful ways behind maybe this wouldn’t be happening to him, yet the reader got none of that from the story leading up to that point. What sinful ways? He seemed like a decent guy for the times he was living in. Honestly, I had to stop listening, which I almost never do, but couldn’t take his self-pity and self-deprecation. Maybe the end rectifies the book but it’s not worth my time to find out.

Jessie Buckley really makes this performance

The story is good, but Jessie’s performance as the narrator is fantastic! She really differentiates between each character which frankly helped me keep everyone straight. She’s extremely engaging.
