Historia
Ray Dalio does not want you to listen to this audiobook. Late last year, when the billionaire founder of Bridgewater Associates, the largest hedge fund on the planet, announced that he was stepping down from the company he started out of his apartment nearly 50 years ago, the news made headlines around the world. Dalio cultivated an aura of international admiration and fame thanks to his company’s eye-popping success, coupled with a mystique he encouraged with frequent media appearances, celebrity hobnobbing, and his bestselling book, Principles.

Loved The Fund, and though Rob Copeland may on occasion pile on, the reality is that bwater has a wild reputation. Great research. Brave reporting. Excellent pace. A must read/listen. Can’t wait for the movie!

Historia
During the rainy summer of 1816, the "Year Without a Summer", the world was locked in a long cold volcanic winter caused by the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815. Mary Shelley, aged 18, and her lover (and later husband) Percy Bysshe Shelley, visited Lord Byron at the Villa Diodati by Lake Geneva in Switzerland. The weather was consistently too cold and dreary that summer to enjoy the outdoor holiday activities they had planned, so the group retired indoors until dawn.

If you missed this in high school, then it is time to finally take it in and relate Shelley’s 1818 vision to what we know and experience today. The story is gold, and this particular production of it served it well.

Historia
When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity. Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media: has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? With a storyteller's genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year 632 A.F. (After Ford, the deity). When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.

With 1984, a must-read for all
Revisado: 11-04-23
In the age of crispr and generally tech for tech’s sake, Brave New World is a must-read for all who might appreciate Alson’s Huxley’s view of the future from 1931-1932. Combine with Orwell’s 1984 and you have a wonderfully dystopian view of things to come as well as already here.
An occasional offensive stereotypical depiction, but otherwise a worthy work. Amazed it was ever banned.

The world’s greatest bodybuilder. The world’s highest-paid movie star. The leader of the world’s sixth-largest economy. That these are the same person sounds like the setup to a joke, but this is no joke. This is Arnold Schwarzenegger. And this did not happen by accident. Arnold’s stratospheric success happened as part of a process. As the result of clear vision, big thinking, hard work, direct communication, resilient problem-solving, open-minded curiosity, and a commitment to giving back. All of it guided by the one lesson Arnold’s father hammered into him above all: be useful.

Revisado: 10-20-23
Everyone should read this book. Arnold’s voice is present in both the words and, fortunately, in the narration. It is perfect and fitting that he was the voice of this book — it could not have been read by anyone else!
Perfect holiday gift for anyone you would like to inspire, too!

Perhaps better titled “CRISPR Part 1”
Revisado: 10-17-23
I had just finished “Elon Musk” - a wonderful five star offering by Isaacson - when I decided to check out Code Breaker. It was more an accounting of CRISPR-related research and developments than it was a bio of Jennifer Doudna. Having spent some time in the word of molecular biology, all the references and backstories of the usual suspects, Watson, Lander, Church, plus the varied competing institutions such as Cold Spring Harbor, Broad, and Berkeley, led me to feelings of PTSD; fully a third of the book seemed devoted to competition, greed, races and claims for who published first, who did the work, and who gets the patent. There is omething very wrong with that industry. Finally, there was one unneeded and biased criticism of Trump — trying to blame the entire lack of preparedness for Covid on him as an individual vs the entire government simply not being prepared. The entire commitment to tests and vaccines will in the end likely require a second edition, and finally, even the continuing battle of who owns the rights to crispr technology and its real uses will definitely require a second edition. All in all, Isaacson is a great author, but the subject matter was constraining. If you can only read one Isaacson book, consider Jobs or Musk.

Historia
Academy Award winner Dustin Hoffman gives an understated and exemplary performance of this satiric look at the unreality of American media culture. Chance, the enigmatic gardener, becomes Chauncey Gardiner after getting hit by a limo belonging to a Wall Street tycoon. The whirlwind that follows brings Chance to his new status of political policy advisor and possible vice presidential candidate. His garden-variety political responses, inspired by television, become heralded as visionary, and he is soon a media icon.

A true original — after all these years
Revisado: 09-30-23
I first heard of Being There when I saw the film in the theater around 1980. From there, I was so enthralled by the story that I got and read the book which as I recall was only a little over 100 pages. Gold. I have kept the film and book on my top ten list for years. Having recently watched the film again, I immediately decided to try the audible version of the book. It does not and will never disappoint. Though I usually “hear” Chance/Chauncey in a Peter Sellers voice, the narration by Dustin Hoffman was outstanding. In an age where storytelling is often challenged and verbose, this story is both original and concise — a must listen/read/view!

When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

I appreciated the latter chapters and thought the advice was clear. Even if one does not use Kirk’s company — naturally, Foresight CFO loves by the advice provided in this book — you should be able to apply what is provided as a general guide to getting a handle on your company’s situation and then moving it toward your exit aims.

You can learn the most popular frameworks, use the best programming languages, and work at the biggest tech companies, but if you cultivate bad habits, it will be hard for you to become a top developer. This book doesn't offer a straight path or pre-defined formula of success. This book is a result of a quest. A quest to uncover what habits can be cultivated to become a better software engineer.
