A kid favorite for over 30 years, this award-winning modern-classic is sure to delight listeners for years to come! When William learns that his favorite caretaker Mrs. Phillips is leaving, he is devastated. But then she gives him her parting gift - a mysterious model castle that has been in her family for years. The castle is perfect in every way, with a drawbridge, a moat, and a fingerhigh knight to guard the gates. It's almost too real. Sure enough, when William picks up the tiny silver knight, Sir Simon comes alive in his hands.

The narrator was the star!
Revisado: 12-29-24
What a challenge this novel, with its hugely diverse ensemble cast of characters, presented to the narrator, who not only rose to the challenge but allowed the novel to soar! I was never bored—and I was often moved. I can only imagine that the author is utterly thrilled with the audio version of her deeply felt story. I have the feeling that we’ll have many opportunities in the future to hear Nicole Cash read to us. I certainly hope so!

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Memorable and highly engrossing story!
Revisado: 02-11-24
I’m a professional novelist myself. I found the writing to be truly lovely. The characters were all distinctly painted. I am a bit in awe of this writer’s skill with such a large cast of characters. This is an excellent Book Club choice. In fact, that is how the book came to my attention. My book group will be discussing The Frozen River next month. Don’t miss the author’s note at the end of the recording!

Historical fantasy buffs will swoon!
Revisado: 05-28-23
This is an unusually fetching performance, one that required each actor to perform many different accents and characters, all of which are beautifully done. I myself had no idea about the history of tarot cards! It’s interesting to try to separate the history from the fantasy. The author has chosen a lively and colorful subject, which she obviously researched deeply. The characters are vivid, the story is engaging, and there is an abundance of fascinating arcana about the theater. Historical fantasy buffs will swoon!

Historia
The complex, deeply binding relationship between mothers and daughters is brought vividly to life in Katie Hafner's remarkable memoir, an exploration of the year she and her mother, Helen, spent working through, and triumphing over, a lifetime of unresolved emotions. Dreaming of a "year in Provence" with her mother, Katie urges Helen to move to San Francisco to live with her and Zoe, Katie's teenage daughter. Katie and Zoe had become a mother-daughter team, strong enough, Katie thought, to absorb the arrival of a 77-year-old woman set in her ways....

This is a touching, insightful, wise, and beautifully written memoir, filled with insights that will resonate with anyone who has ever wrestled with her memories of an unreliable attachment figure . The author is a master of her craft and also, obviously, an extremely evolved and compassionate human being. Listen and be swept away!

A rare novel that is better listened to than read
Revisado: 07-21-16
What a delight to have finally experienced this magnificent novel! I had always meant to read Don Quixote--but, honestly, listening to it, narrated so skillfully, was even more of a delight than simply reading it would have been. The translator and the narrator conspired to make all the arcane bits utterly accessible and delightful. I laughed out loud several times. It's unbelievable how modern a novel Cervantes wrote some 400 years ago! He was a genius. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza will live in my heart forever.
