Historia
My husband is dead. I attended his funeral. I watched his casket be lowered six feet into the ground. (Actually, it may have been only five feet, but that still seems like more than enough.) And then we ate an array of finger sandwiches and deviled eggs and miniature beef wellingtons that cost more than my first car. My point is, Grant is gone. And so are all his many, many deep, dark secrets which I never really ever bothered to ask him about. He is never coming back.

genius narration
Revisado: 11-19-24
Marin Ireland dies it again - she’s just so darned good. And this novella like a delicious confection. It made me laugh out loud and after a thoroughly miserable week, that’s saying something!

this was for me an absolutely delightful romp — clever, terrific character-driven dialogue and if it hasn’t been optioned for a film or series, someone is missing the boat.

i am SO tempted to say “out of this world!” but i’m going to restrain myself and say this is a must-listen for anyone who is a Star Trek fan. And even if you’re not, it is absolutely worth your time!! an engaging, delightful tale told gorgeously by the author (which almost never happens in my experience).

Historia
Rife with the indulgent pleasures of life among New York’s one-percenters, Pineapple Street is a smart, escapist novel that sparkles with wit. Full of recognizable, loveable—if fallible—characters, it’s about the peculiar unknowability of someone else’s family, the miles between the haves and have-nots, and the insanity of first love—all wrapped in a story that is a sheer delight.

simultaneously luscious, heartbreaking and delightful. i was surprised by the sensitivity of the writing and the narration and grateful
to Mr. Osman for giving us elderly characters who are not the too-typical caricatures one often finds in mysteries but instead offers us human beings who are complex and fully realized.

Historia
People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning.

Revisado: 09-22-23
this is a gorgeous book with beautifully crafted, surprisingly poetic and fully realized characters. the real revelation for me was the narration, which was subtle and nuanced and finely honed. it was for me powerful and simultaneously restrained without ever drawing attention to itself. do yourself a favor and don’t let this book pass by.

i loved everything about this book. the wait for it felt interminable but even with that anticipation it did not disappoint even for an instant. Ms Penny is a master storyteller, the narration was excellent and my only regret is that i arrived at the inevitable end of the book only to have to wait once more for her to begin again.

Historia
Judith Potts is 77 years old and blissfully happy. She lives on her own in a faded mansion just outside Marlow, there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink, and to keep herself busy she sets crosswords for The Times newspaper. One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. The local police don’t believe her story, so she decides to investigate for herself and is soon joined in her quest by Suzie, a salt-of-the-earth dog-walker, and Becks, the prim and proper wife of the local vicar.

keep walking
Revisado: 11-29-22
Such a disappointment. It had all of the ingredients for a wonderful ride but try as i might i couldn’t even make myself finish it. The characters felt like caricatures and in many ways so did the plot with the main character serially spelling things out for others and the (reader). Perhaps things picked up in the second half of the book but i found i really didn’t care who ‘done it’.
