Historia
The only thing more beautiful than Beyoncé is God, and God is a black woman sipping rosé and drawing a lavender bath, texting her mom, belly laughing in the therapist's office, feeling unloved, being on display, daring to survive. Morgan Parker stands at the intersections of vulnerability and performance, of desire and disgust, of tragedy and excellence. Unrelentingly feminist, tender, and ruthless, these poems are an altar to the complexities of black American womanhood in an age of non-indictments and déjà vu.

Took time to get into it.
Revisado: 04-09-24
Ultimately I found myself enjoying it, but at first it felt so random like smatterings of thoughts w/ pseudo depth to them. Then, a melody started forming to the poetry & it began to feel soothing & worthwhile to listen to through its completion.

Historia
If you grew up with an emotionally immature, unavailable, or selfish parent, you may recall your childhood as a time when your emotional needs were not met or dismissed—and you may have lingering feelings of anger, loneliness, betrayal, and abandonment. As an adult, you have fought hard to establish your own sense of self, and heal the wounds caused by your upbringing. But what about other emotionally immature people (EIP) in your life? As an adult child of an emotionally immature parent (ACEIP), you may be particularly vulnerable to EIPs.

Super healing, insightful & therapeutic :)
Revisado: 04-02-24
This book is a must keep. It is an incredible worthwhile investment of one’s time if you are grappling with issues that pertain to dealing with or not wanting to deal with EIP’s. I personally would recommend reading this book more than once. Let all the richness of it soak in. :)

You just have to read this. It’s that clear.
Revisado: 02-12-23
This is a must-read book. It’s how I felt with every word spoken. It’s funny how it’s a book that I didn’t know that I needed to read for its pure honesty & insights, for its relatability (though not in every nuisanced way), and for letting us know as black women that the things we contend with in this world are not all in our heads… those many things, individuals, entities , slights & straight out outrageously cruel events that makes soooo many of us tired & in need of a good rest. I never realized my palpability, due to my inherent calm, quiet, nature could have led to my own experiences with tokenism & then ever subsequent dismissals everytime I have had enough. I don’t want to be a perfect representative of my culture or a black woman, sad it can get misconstrued that way until you as the living “construct” catch on or aren’t a reflection of that anymore & for whatever reason in this country/ world.

Historia
Like Gloria Naylor’s The Women of Brewster Place, Sidik Fofana’s electrifying collection of eight interconnected stories showcases the strengths, struggles, and hopes of one residential community in a powerful storytelling experience. Each short story follows a tenant in the Banneker Homes, a low-income high rise in Harlem where gentrification weighs on everyone’s mind. We root for these characters and more as they weave in and out of each other’s lives, endeavoring to escape from their pasts and blaze new paths forward for themselves and the people they love.

Left something to be desired
Revisado: 02-09-23
I am glad I finished it, but I did struggle to finish it & connected with only two tenants- the one who lost his friend & dealing with deep regret & the one who decided he couldn’t sell himself just to keep his place.

Historia
It took me a lifetime to have the courage and the clarity to write my memoir. I want to tell the story of the moments - the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the debacles and the dreams - that contributed to the person I am today. This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival, and my songs. Unfiltered. I went deep into my childhood and gave the scared little girl inside of me a big voice. I let the abandoned and ambitious adolescent have her say, and the betrayed and triumphant woman I became tell her side.

Mariah wow this is a must read
Revisado: 11-29-21
I am gonna listen to this more than once. Mariah is as strong as she is sweet, funny, vulnerable and encouraging. I wish I could return the favor because I feel blessed by this project of hers, reading her autobiography. Been a fan since I was 10 years old. I thought I knew why- duh, her extremely beautiful voice & lyrical talent, warm/fun personality & glamorous presence, but after reading this, I definitely know why… on a much deeper, profound level even if the respect was always, ALWAYS there. She represents pure courage & coming out the other side of pain over & over again to have your own back even while others cannot or will not. It is healing to know this is possible. It’s a testimony.
