Such a delightful listen. Mrs. Pollifax is such a fun character and the narrator did an excellent job capturing the humor. I laughed out loud many times and look forward to listening to more in the series!

Fun Listen
Revisado: 06-07-21
The Anne of Green Gables books are among my all-time favorites, so I was apprehensive about this book. This is sacred ground we’re dealing with. But someone I trust recommended it, so I gave it a try. It was an engaging story, well-written, and the narrator did a fine job (although sometimes her overly-open vowels got on my nerves, and the women all sounded no older than in their twenties, even the characters who were much older than that). It was fun to read Marilla and John’s story, and to read about Marilla and Matthew’s parents. But I did think Matthew’s character was not quite as shy as in the Green Gables book (and he did say in Anne of Green Gables that he never courted anyone, so that part of the story felt unbelievable to me), and I thought Marilla’s character was a bit too warm and passionate and motherly, compared to how she was in the Green Gables books (especially before Anne “softened” her up a bit). I felt like the author was maybe trying a bit too hard to make the characters fit the story she wanted to tell, rather than making them more true to the Green Gables series. But all in all it was a fun listen and I’d recommend it to someone looking for a light read who wants a bit more Green Gables in their life.

Miss Marple encounters a compelling murder mystery in the sleepy little village of St. Mary Mead, where under the seemingly peaceful exterior of an English country village lurks intrigue, guilt, deception and death. Colonel Protheroe, local magistrate and overbearing land-owner is the most detested man in the village. Everyone—even in the vicar—wishes he were dead. And very soon he is—shot in the head in the vicar's own study. Faced with a surfeit of suspects, only the inscrutable Miss Marple can unravel the tangled web of clues that will lead to the unmasking of the killer.

Great storyline, good narration
Revisado: 03-23-21
I at first wasn’t sure if I liked this book. It’s not my first Agatha Christie but it’s my first Miss Marple. I didn’t care for the narrator’s voice at first, and didn’t like that the book was written in first person. I also didn’t care much for most of the characters (including the vicar). But as the book went on, the plot became more and more interesting, and the narrator grew on me. He’s not my favorite, but he did a good job at the many different voices. I don’t really care for first person narrative, but it did work in this book, and the mystery was very engaging. By the end it was difficult to put the book down, and I even grew a little fond of some of the characters (I of course did like Miss Marple, and a few other characters grew on me as well). Overall it was an enjoyable listen and I’m looking forward to the next Miss Marple book!

How can you go wrong?
Revisado: 06-26-19
What can I say? My favorite narrator combined with one of my favorite books, what’s not to love! Juliet Stevenson was a joy to listen to as always, I only wish the book lasted longer. It isn’t perhaps one of Austen’s wittiest books - it doesn’t quite have as many quirky characters as, say, Pride and Prejudice or Emma, but I love this story and it still has some good characters. It was a pleasure to listen to!

Masterful Narrator
Revisado: 05-05-19
First, all else about the book aside, this narrator is amazing. So talented, you forget that it is just one person doing all these voices. She was incredible.
As far as the actual book, there are things I love about it and things I don’t love. It’s difficult for me to get into a book where I hate the main character, and for a while I wasn’t sure if I would be able to stand reading the whole thing when Scarlet bugs me so much I want to punch her in the face most of the time. And don’t even get me started on Ashley. But, despite hating these two, this really is a beautifully told story and while there were some parts where I started losing interest, for the most part I was very engaged throughout the entire (very long) book. I’m not sure that it could ever be a favorite of mine, simply because of how angry some of the main characters make me, but I’m glad I listened to it, and the narrator made it all worth it!

Delightful narration of one of Austen's wittiest works
Revisado: 03-14-18
I know Emma isn't a favorite of most Austen lovers, but I think, excepting Pride and Prejudice, Emma contains the quirkiest characters and the wittiest banter of any of her books. I also appreciate that Emma is a flawed heroine that we get to see progress and mature. And, Mr Knightley is definitely my favorite love interest of Austen's books. So dreamy. Juliet Stevenson's narration is flawless and a delight to listen to. I can't imagine anyone else capturing each character so well. If you're going to listen to Emma, choose this narration!!

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Jane Austen at her best
Revisado: 02-07-18
Out of all the Jane Austen novels, this is still my favorite. I love most of Austen's books, but the characters, the wit, the storyline, all combine here to create her masterpiece. I never tire of this book (or the A&E adaptation- superb!).
As far as the narrator, I must admit that at first I contemplated returning this. Mrs. Bennet's voice was at first so obnoxious to me that I couldn't handle it, but it actually grew on me and I didn't mind it by the end of the book (although I often wished her Mrs. Bennet was a bit more expressive). Her narration in general is very pleasing, she has a soothing voice that is pleasant to listen to. But I didn't love most of her characters. She did fine with Mr. Collins and Elizabeth and Jane, but I was particularly disappointed with her Mr Bennet and her Lady Catherine de Bourgh. I didn't think she did them justice at all. But, overall it was a fine adaptation and the book itself is so perfect that it makes up for the minor imperfections of the narrator. :)

Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

Awesome narrator, good story
Revisado: 01-13-18
I loved this narrator. She did such an excellent job of all the voices and was very pleasant to listen to.
This isn't my favorite story, but I did enjoy it. Margaret is not my favorite heroine, but I did appreciate a lot of her characteristics. I loved Mr. Thornton's character - he was definitely my favorite. I wished there were more quirky characters to lighten a very serious and somewhat dismal storyline, but that may not have been true to the character of the book (I just happen to prefer books with quirky characters). I would probably listen to it again, but would probably only recommend it to those who really enjoy classics and have a good attention span (this book can sometimes be a bit monotonous).

My favorite Anne book
Revisado: 11-30-17
This is my favorite Anne book (although Anne of Avonlea competes for a very close second). The story is charming, there is mystery, new characters, and we finally see Anne and Gilbert married! I was pleased with the narration, I think Susan O'Malley captures Anne's voice better than any other narrator I've heard, and she does a good job with the other characters as well (although I think perhaps she portrays Susan's voice as older than it should be). Overall a lovely listen!

Lovely story, narrator okay
Revisado: 11-15-17
This isn't my favorite Anne book, but it is certainly charming and enjoyable. The narrator was okay, but a little odd. Almost all of the older women in the story were given deep manly voices, very strange. Anne's voice was okay, but she often sounded more middle aged than a girl in her early twenties. There were some voices I thought she did well, and I wasn't usually annoyed by her narration, I just found it odd. Still a very enjoyable listen, and was so happy to find an audio version of this book, it is hard to find!
