Historia
When it comes to climate-change-inspired threats, it is rising sea levels we hear most about. But if the oceans are, as Herman Melville put it, “the tide-beating heart of the Earth”, rivers are its circulatory system. In the United States, there is no river more storied, symbolic, and vital than the Mississippi, and none, to use Mark Twain’s word, more lawless. The struggle to control it has been going on nearly as long as there has been human civilization on its banks, and the attendant drama and dangers have been memorialized by many writers.

Another fine work, flawed only by its brevity.
Revisado: 12-27-21
The Master once again has produced a masterful work -- his erudition enhanced by his own immensely satisfying narration. I regret only that S.W. saw fit, probably out of necessity, to limit the spoken book to less than two hours. But, I'll take what I can get and be thankful for it. Thanks, Simon!

Historia
In a cave high in the Alps, a renegade anthropologist discovers a frozen Neanderthal couple with a Homo sapiens baby. Meanwhile, in southern Russia, the U.N. investigation of a mysterious mass grave is cut short. One of the investigators, molecular biologist Kaye Lang, returns home to the U.S. to learn that her theory on human retroviruses has been verified with the discovery of SHEVA, a virus that has slept in our DNA for millions of years and is now waking up.

Great story, talented narration, bad editing.
Revisado: 07-26-21
It's worth the listening, and would be a classic audio sci-fi , were it not for the choppy editing. Some chapters start the very instant the previous one ends. One chapter started before the previous one ended -- cutting the final word in two! It's frustrating, but I grew accustomed to this flaw and really enjoyed the book. I recommend it, but be warned.
