Historia
Corin Cadence has been summoned to meet with the Emerald Council, a political summit including the most powerful of all attuned and their closest political allies. His summons came with a dire warning—that war was coming to the nation of Valia. While Valia is no stranger to warfare, the circumstances of this invasion are dire. Valia's visage, Tenjin, remains missing. Many of the nation's leaders were slain during Mizuchi's attack, and others killed or injured through Saffron's machinations. With a critical power vacuum in Valia's leadership, few can be trusted.

Ridiculous
Revisado: 04-22-25
In the past, the protagonists could be forgiven for getting into conflicts they were completely outclassed in because they moved away from danger whenever possible. This book starts with our hero recuperating from a battle with an enemy miles above them in the last book that he's meant to spend 6 months recuperating from and the narrative has him going up against people who are miles beyond his power level even were he not hurt.
There are other people in this world with much more experience, without injuries, and greater stakes in the outcomes. I want to enjoy the read but it strains my suspension of disbelief to the point of breaking.
I'm a fan of the series so I will try to get back to this but I might not. I really need to be able to believe a narrative in order to enjoy it.

Freddy Stern, a twenty-one-year-old cashier, has lived a plain, albeit harsh life. Having been orphaned—twice—he's spent the last ten years working and staying out of trouble. His only aspiration is to save enough money to become an archhuman. His dream gets the jump on him when he barely survives a near-death encounter and finds himself in possession of 1% Lifesteal, a bizarre talent with numerous contradictions and just as many uses.

Worth Reading but needs editing
Revisado: 04-10-25
I enjoyed this and recommend it if the blurb appeals to you. this would be five stars if withheld information didn't cause me to frequently not understand what is happening in the scene until much later in the story when necessary exposition is finally given to us. This is a common mistake with newer writers so I'm hoping future novels won't have the same issues.

Great with Occasional lulls in pace.
Revisado: 04-07-25
Most of this book is wonderful. I had a good time and recommended it.
The only criticism I have is that the interactions between the characters with a cast that has ballooned over six books and that keeps most of them around really becomes a slog around chapter 39 or so.
There are other issues like a brilliant AI with massive resources failing to make smarter tactical decisions and have fail-safes and fall back plans. This is an issue many authors have when writing geniuses... you really have to use the advantage of being able to think about things and talk about them with smart friends in order to model the amount of brain power they should show casually. However, this is only an issue intermittently as the genius AI usually makes optimal decisions. It's still weird when it doesn't.

Love the series, bored by mystery
Revisado: 04-03-25
When Brin and company are gaining skills, levels, and adventuring and exploring the world or learning crafts, I'm all in. When I have to endure numerous investigations that usually only unveil nothing or not enough of the mystery for a clever reader to figure it out, I am forced to accept the poor mystery writing is because they are not writing a mystery.
There's a place for investigation and some withheld information in the litrpg genre, but it's like eating vegetables with a steak. Some broccoli and a side salad are fine. Not everyone wants them, but for many, that improves the meal. This book made me feel like I had to eat an entire head of broccoli before I got steak. The previous book had a lot of this too so I may stop reading if book 4 keeps loading up heavy on mystery. Just tell me a good story. Withheld information is so dull - especially when I guessed what was happening the moment the correlation with Lumina's injury was mentioned. The caravan traitor has me stumped still, but it is not a vital mystery and I suspect we would know what happened the had the narrative included the bandit's interrogation - which Hogg heard - so he likely holds a key to the mystery that will solve it once something unfortunate happens.
Here's hoping book 4 will be just litrpg with no mysteries that last longer than a single investigation.

Some people just knew how to go out in style. Tim had never been one of those guys. Tim was always a planner. The plan was to get into college, graduate, and find a well-paying job. That plan was coming together nicely until he saw a presentation to get paid to play The Etheric Coast. At his graduation ceremony. After watching the company's employee recruitment video, Big Richie's words had a whole new meaning. He could spend his life going from a cubicle at work to a one-bedroom apartment and back again...or enter a virtual world of unlimited possibilities.

Room to Improve
Revisado: 03-30-25
The dialogue, jokes, and relationships all occasionally read false as they are impossibly awkward and yet treated like normal speech, and there are numerous scenes and unimportant characters that should have been cut, but should this author get some beta readers critical enough to point out issues and actually listen to them. . . and do some guided practice on dialogue and joke writing, they could start producing work that might have a chance at becoming popular.

Historia
When the cultivators came to Earth, they destroyed our entire civilization in a matter of hours. Armies fell, cities burned, and that was before the moon turned red and filled our world with monsters. Now, over a decade later, what's left of humanity slaves under the heels of our Qi-infused masters. The luckiest of us might even become one of them, they say—if we serve the Dynasty well enough and harness the power of Qi. But I want none of that. I'm sick of serving, and I want nothing to do with their world. Instead, I want them to pay for what they did to mine.

When life gives you lemonade, make tantrums
Revisado: 03-30-25
Litrpg is all about wish fulfillment, but I have never been a fan of The Incredible Hulk for the same reason that I am not a fan of this book: I think it's detestable to allow anger to goad a person to physical violence, foolish to plan necessary violence angry, and the metaphor of a monster inside causing a lack of control is a convenient excuse for men who don't want to take responsibility for their actions.
Plus, the character's growth comes far too easily. He's fueled not by Qi but by people's anger, hatred, lust, or adoration and every conflict is the hero getting beaten and then getting real mad and his tantrum powers making him power up to overcome. As a result, it doesn't feel much like progression. There is some but you know it won't matter because he's going to hulk out to win anyway.
There's a lot to dislike but I settled on 3 stars because if someone does have angry boy issues, they'll probably like it. There are some fun things happening in the book, and I was enjoying this despite myself before the combat became repetitive and the progression flattened. I scoffed at the silliness of the angry boy stuff throughout though, so personally this is two stars.

Scattered and Meandering
Revisado: 03-27-25
I'm a fan of this author and I am supportive of queer voices. Additionally, I enjoyed the previous book in this series but I'm finding it more difficult to do so in this one. The protagonist's goals are to get an education sufficient to at least transition gender and to explore romantic relationships. That's a normal amount of ambition for a young adult, but it fails to be compelling.
When I think of other low stakes books in this genre, they all tend to focus on a business and the stakes involved personally and for the employees and community should the business fail. The stakes of Mana Mirror are really just possible setbacks - with the brief life or death stakes occasionally interspersed during fights.

Light on Progression
Revisado: 03-22-25
A story about a battle royale situation should be much more poignant and disturbing then this, but I could accept that if the progression was more part of conflict resolution. instead the story is mostly resolved through group dynamics and game strategy. this seems to be more game with than it is litrpg but it came up when searching litrpg so I have to judge it by how it was marketed. Also for such large groups it is amazing that they found so many psychopaths and people who are emotionally adaptable enough to not become victims. Basically, I found myself not believing it and thus not enjoying it.

The end of the world had arrived just as many had predicted, in a global exchange of nuclear weapons. What no one predicted was the sudden message that appeared before every living soul moments before impact, a message from "The Administrators" revealing our entire world and everything in it to be a species simulation. According to the message, humanity had been reset over a million times and every single time we could not prevent our own extinction. No more resets for humanity. No more chances.

Revisado: 03-22-25
Imagining how you would survive the post-apocalypse is not a bad thing and some people may even find it entertaining. however, when you put it next to other books that try to do more it woefully does not compete. The big bumps are a self sacrifice that is both congratulated and mourned and a "system" that is limited to long item descriptions during the assessment. The fact that these are all descriptions of extant mundane weapons really bores too. As a love letter from a man writing a book for his immediate family, this is great, but for everyone else the self-indulgence will likely be spinach on our corn flakes.
