Historia
The prompt seemed simple: Race. Your Story. Six Words. Please Send. The answers, though, have been challenging and complicated. In the twelve years since award-winning journalist Michele Norris first posed that question, over half a million people have submitted their stories to The Race Card Project inbox. The stories are shocking in their depth and candor, spanning the full spectrum of race, ethnicity, identity, and class. Even at just six words, the micro-essays can pack quite a punch, revealing, fear, pain, triumph, and sometimes humor.

Honest and eye-opening look at race in America
Revisado: 01-10-25
This is the perspective of race in America we all need because it comes from everyday citizens from all races, ethnicities and walks of life. It would be an ideal place to start having much-needed difficult conversations and reconciliation needed to begin healing.

Historia
Olivia Jones, hard-working and accomplished, has, against the odds, blazed an enviable career path in the finance world. But behind the veneer of her success, she is mourning several devastating losses and betrayals. Untethered from her life in New York City, Olivia moves to a summer home in The Hamptons. Here, Olivia finds a close-knit community of African American elites who escape New York City for the beautiful beaches of the Hamptons. Since the 1930s, very few have known about this Historically Black Beachfront Community, and the residents like it that way.

Another summer guilty pleasure
Revisado: 07-23-23
Perfect follow-up to “Summer on the Bluffs.” Another fascinating cast of characters and juicy story. I’m happy Olivia got her time to shine in this summer’s guilty pleasure. Bring on the third installment.

Inspiring and Honest!
Revisado: 01-02-18
Shonda Rhimes further demonstrates her superb storytelling skill in this inspiring memoir. I am an introvert and this book spoke to me in ways I cannot describe. It is funny, inspiring, and brutally honest. I loved every minute of this book, but my favorite part was Shonda’s commencement address to the graduates of her alma mater Dartmouth College. Even though I am a woman who recently celebrated her 20th year out of college, I was moved by Ms. Rhimes’s inspirational message. I had to listen to this part two times. I will listen to this book again. I will also make it required reading for my children when they are old enough to make their own decisions in life. Thanks Shonda, for your wisdom and insights!

Historia
Jende Jonga, a Cameroonian immigrant living in Harlem, has come to the United States to provide a better life for himself; his wife, Neni; and their six-year-old son. In the fall of 2007, Jende can hardly believe his luck when he lands a job as a chauffeur for Clark Edwards, a senior executive at Lehman Brothers. Clark demands punctuality, discretion, and loyalty - and Jende is eager to please. Clark's wife, Cindy, even offers Neni temporary work at the Edwardses' summer home in the Hamptons.

A Touching and Timely Story
Revisado: 08-12-17
Mbue beautifully captured the story of an immigrant family from Africa who longs to build a life in America. This powerful and compelling story follows the plight of Jende Jonga and his wife Neni and their desire to become American citizens and achieve personal success. The characters are well-developed. They are believable and leave the reader rooting for them despite their many challenges. Even though this story takes place around 2008, it has relevance in today’s political debate about immigration. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book. “AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY”
